\n\tNearly a month after the late Robin Williams<\/a>\u2019\u00a075th birthday, his three children have revived his Instagram account as a hub for honoring their father\u2019s legacy \u2014 and to combat the \u201crampant AI abuse\u201d\u00a0of his likeness.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re grateful to see new generations discovering his work while longtime fans continue to celebrate the joy he brought into their lives,\u201d Zak, Zelda and Cody Williams wrote in a joint statement posted on the actor\u2019s Instagram page on Monday. \u201cAs technology evolves, we want this to be a safe, trusted place where the stories, photos, videos, and memories shared reflect his legacy with authenticity, warmth, and care. This is our way of sharing his unique talent and humor with the world, including the moments that made us and so many of you laugh, as we remember our Dad\u2019s extraordinary life and work. He continues to inspire us and delight people all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZelda Williams<\/a>, the Oscar-winning comedian\u2019s eldest daughter, elaborated on the decision in an Instagram story on her personal account, recognizing it could be \u201ctriggering\u201d for some of Williams\u2019\u00a0fans to see the account active again. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBelieve me, I know it\u2019s a little strange,\u201d\u00a0she wrote. \u201cMaking that space into one where people can find authentic clips and photos of him is one of the best ways we\u2019ve now found to fight back against rampant AI abuse of his voice and likeness on here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe decision comes as the rampant, unauthorized production of AI-generated deepfakes of celebrities both alive and deceased has forced those figures and their estates to figure out how to make sure verified images break through. His Instagram account has been dormant since his 2014 death.<\/p>\n

\n\tZelda Williams has torn into the unauthorized use of her father\u2019s likeness before, asking those in October who sent her AI videos of her father to \u201cstop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s dumb, it\u2019s a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it\u2019s NOT what he\u2019d want,\u201d\u00a0she wrote<\/a> in an Instagram story at the time. \u201cTo watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to \u2018this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that\u2019s enough\u2019, just so other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThose comments followed similar ones she made<\/a> in 2023 during the Screen Actors Guild strike, where she regarded AI videos featuring her father\u2019s voice as \u201cpersonally disturbing.\u201d<\/p>\n
