{"id":644495,"date":"2026-08-19T00:14:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T00:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/644495\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T00:14:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T00:14:18","slug":"stormont-minister-of-health-mike-nesbitt-resigns-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/644495\/","title":{"rendered":"Stormont Minister of Health Mike Nesbitt resigns \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Stormont Minister of Health Mike Nesbitt has resigned from his post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leader has held the portfolio in the Northern Ireland Assembly since May 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He had recently come under pressure from campaigners against the withdrawal of emergency general surgery from Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, Co Derry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">UUP leader Jon Burrows was among those who indicated support for the hospital to keep the service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nesbitt did not make any comment on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A UUP spokesman confirmed the Strangford MLA had \u201cchosen to resign\u201d the health portfolio and the party would set out details on the next steps shortly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe can confirm that Mike Nesbitt has chosen to resign as Minister of Health and we thank him sincerely for his service and for the leadership he has given to our health and social care workforce,\u201d said the spokesman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMike took on one of the most difficult briefs in government with a genuine determination to make health and social care better for everyone in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFrom beginning the shift towards a neighbourhood model of care, to putting health inequalities at the centre of policy, he leaves a significant legacy, not least the progress made on some of Northern Ireland\u2019s longest waiting lists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The spokesman added: \u201cThe Ulster Unionist Party will set out further details on next steps shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nesbitt served twice as UUP leader, from 2013 to 2017 and again from 2024 until earlier this year when Burrows was appointed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was first elected as an MLA in 2011 following a high-profile broadcasting career and he was also commissioner for victims and survivors. \u2013 PA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Stormont Minister of Health Mike Nesbitt has resigned from his post.
