President Donald Trump has doubled down on his claims an alleged mental health crisis among sailors and Marines aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln is a \u201cfake CNN report,\u201d adding the aircraft carrier has been \u201cbeautifully maintained and beautifully taken care of\u201d despite evidence of rationed food, spotty electricity and suicide attempts among service members.<\/p>\n

Trump, while taking questions in the Oval Office Monday evening, acknowledged the Lincoln has been “out there” for a “good period of time” but said reports of moldy showers, periods without hot water and rationed meals are \u201cfake.\u201d <\/p>\n
The president is the latest official to deny the reports from families and representatives of service members on the ship, including Rep. Pat Fallon<\/a> (R-Texas), who on Monday dismissed the claims because he hadn\u2019t \u201cheard anything personally,\u201d adding \u201cI trust the Navy.\u201d <\/p>\n Admiral Brad Cooper, the commander of U.S. Central Command, visited the USS Abraham Lincoln Saturday and claimed mental health cases on the ship were relatively low compared to other aircraft carriers, despite the families of several service members reporting suicide attempts and ideation. <\/p>\n The 5,000 crew members of the USS Abraham Lincoln have been at sea for 270 days as of Tuesday in one of the longest aircraft carrier deployments in modern history, and families and legislators have warned of a worsening mental health crisis onboard.<\/p>\n Multiple military publications and Congressmen have sounded the alarm about conditions aboard the 37-year-old, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, which is in its ninth month at sea and fifth month of combat operations against Iran. <\/p>\n The USS George Washington, which is based in Japan, will replace the Lincoln, the Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported last week citing sources familiar with the matter, but it\u2019s not clear exactly when. <\/p>\n Multiple military publications and Congressmen have sounded the alarm about conditions aboard the 37-year-old, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, which is in its ninth month at sea and fifth month of combat operations against Iran. <\/p>\n The USS George Washington, which is based in Japan, will replace the Lincoln, the Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported last week citing sources familiar with the matter, but it\u2019s not clear exactly when. <\/p>\n The Lincoln\u2019s deployment started on Nov. 21 and was expected to end in May, but it has been extended several times without a confirmed end date. <\/p>\n The public has been made aware of conditions onboard including rationed food and broken amenities, but Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed the accounts as \u201cmore fake news<\/a>\u201d and did so again<\/a> last week, saying the reports “completely misrepresented” conditions onboard. <\/p>\n The Navy has not responded to Forbes\u2019 request for comment. <\/p>\n NEWS PEG<\/p>\n President Donald Trump on Friday brushed off concerns<\/a> about reported mental health issues among the ship\u2019s crew, saying its deployment has been \u201cnot nearly long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n Key background<\/p>\n The USS Abraham Lincoln, which functions as a mobile air base at sea, left its homeport in San Diego on Nov. 21 for a routine Pacific deployment. The carrier was redirected to the Middle East in January, ahead of the U.S. and Israel’s attacks on Iran, and has been stationed in the Arabian Sea ever since. The crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln has stepped foot on land only two days since leaving San Diego, according to independent military publication Stars and Stripes<\/a>\u2014one in Guam in December (where many sailors were not allowed to disembark) and one re-stocking stop in Oman in July, where sailors who could leave the ship were restricted to a secure compound within the port. Officials have been unable to tell families when the Lincoln will return home and one veteran told Stars and Stripes “uncertainty” over when a deployment will end can take a “significant toll” on servicemembers. One wife told the outlet her husband had texted her saying \u201che hopes he doesn\u2019t wake up tomorrow,\u201d and one parent told the outlet their sailor son reported “he and his shipmates constantly think about jumping off the ship just for relief.” The Navy Times<\/a>, an independent news outlet that covers the U.S. Navy, reported multiple servicemembers have attempted to jump from the carrier and Stars and Stripes<\/a> also reported on thwarted suicide attempts onboard. Rep. Mike Levin<\/a>,D-Calif., has said servicemembers are dealing with inhumane physical conditions on the ship and Rep. Jason Crow<\/a> ,D-Colo., has warned the mental “strain on our service members and their families is building week by week.” <\/p>\n CRUCIAL QUOTE<\/p>\n “Moldy showers, broken toilets, laundry down for weeks, long stretches with no hot water, a meal that came down to half a cup of rice and two tortillas,” Levin<\/a> said of life aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. \u201cNo soap, deodorant or toothpaste.\u201d <\/p>\n BIG NUMBER<\/p>\n Six months. That had been the modern-day standard<\/a> deployment for the Navy\u2019s carrier strike groups, but too few in service and too many hotspots have led to increasingly long terms. The USS Gerald R.
