American chat show host Rosie O’Donnell has opened up about her new life in Ireland, revealing how a couple’s candid seven-word remark in a beer garden left her gobsmacked<\/p>\n

Rosie O’Donnell has shared insights into her fresh start in Ireland – recounting the surprising moment a couple’s remark in a beer garden caught her completely off guard. The American television personality was born in New York in 1962 to a father who emigrated from County Donegal and an Irish American mother<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She relocated to Ireland with her son Clay in March 2025, however, just before Donald Trump’s<\/a> second presidential inauguration, pointing to the “heartbreaking” political climate back in the States. Rosie didn’t hold back her views at the time, which led the President to threaten revoking her birthright US citizenship while she pursued Irish citizenship<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Initially, the mum and son duo rented a place in Howth before making their home in Sandymount<\/a>. Speaking recently on Jordan Schmidt and Casey Reihana’s Beyond Limits Talks podcast, the 64-year-old opened up about life on the Emerald Isle.<\/p>\n

“The best part [about living in Ireland] is they don’t have celebrity culture there,” she explained to Casey. “Nobody really cares that you’re famous. When people found out I had moved here, they said, ‘Welcome Rosie, you belong here’, and it was so sweet.”<\/p>\n

She then described the beer garden encounter, which happened just a week following her arrival. “I’m sitting next to a couple and their little two-year old baby… husband and wife, lovely people,” she recalled.<\/p>\n

“Clay started playing with their baby and we spent two-and-a-half hours together and at the very end as we’re leaving, I said to them, ‘Thank you very much, it’s been lovely meeting you’.”<\/p>\n

However, the couple’s reply completely stunned her. “They said, ‘By the way Rosie, we’re huge fans’. And I said, ‘Oh really, you thought you’d wait until the end of the dinner to bring that up?'” she recalled.<\/p>\n

“And the woman said, ‘Well surely it’s not the most important thing now, is it?’ And I thought, now that’s a sentence you would never hear in America. That it’s not the most important thing about you, and that’s what I found out.”<\/p>\n

Rosie also disclosed that the “hardest part” of living in Ireland is being separated from her adult children and her close friends and family, who are “really important” to her.<\/p>\n

“It’s been very difficult,” she admitted. “And lonely sometimes. But I have met two really good friends, whose little kids have autism [like Clay] and they’re the same age as Clay and we socialise together, which has been really helpful.”<\/p>\n

Last year, Trump launched a scathing attack on Rosie via Truth Social, declaring: “Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship.<\/p>\n

“She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” The bitter rivalry between the two spans nearly 20 years, going back to before his first presidential campaign, when she was still presenting on The View.
