font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">A steady buzz is growing around China as advanced robotics emerges as the next frontier of the global AI boom, encompassing both investor enthusiasm and alarm from rivals such as the United States.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Hundreds of companies are taking part in the World Robot Conference in Beijing on Wednesday, the same day national champion Unitree made its much-anticipated stock market debut.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m still in my training period, so I&#8217;m feeling a little nervous,&#8221; the self-described &#8220;intern&#8221; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">However, in its prospectus, the company said large-scale commercial deployment &#8220;still faces uncertainty, with a risk that progress will fall short of expectations&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Experts say the holy grail &#8212; machines capable of independently reacting to the unpredictability of any real-life situation &#8212; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Aside from hardware issues, large-scale deployment requires gathering huge amounts of data &#8212; the real-world equivalent of the online content large language models train on.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">At one training company visited by AFP, humans holding what looked like PlayStation controllers repeated a single task &#8212; folding clothes, moving blocks, spraying a canister &#8212; as humanoid partners mirrored their actions.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Generally, an employee told AFP, a usable model required tens of thousands of hours of data.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">China&#8217;s advantages lie in manufacturing scale, supply chain integration and cost competitiveness, said Counterpoint Research&#8217;s Ethan Qi, while the United States is &#8220;much stronger&#8221; on software and cutting-edge research.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">AFP contacted multiple Chinese companies to ask for reaction to the ban, including main exporters Unitree, UBTECH and Agibot.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none;
