But as crucial as it is for maintaining these processes, consuming too much sodium can be harmful.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Read on to discover the dangers of excess sodium intake, plus the \u201chealthy\u201d foods that can be surprisingly high in sodium that you should be aware of.<\/p>\n<p>The dangers of consuming too much sodium<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sodium\/how-much-sodium-should-i-eat-per-day\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sodium\/how-much-sodium-should-i-eat-per-day\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"American Heart Association\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Heart Association<\/a> (AHA) recommends that adults aim to consume no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium per day, with an optimal goal of around 1,500 mg per day. Why? Most of these are processed and packaged foods, which account for the majority of Americans\u2019 sodium intake, per the AHA. And while none of these foods are inherently \u201cunhealthy,\u201d says Peruvemba, the amount of sodium they contain may shock you.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Here are the foods experts say may contain a surprising amount of sodium, so make sure to check the nutrition facts before enjoying them:<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.0\">Salted nuts<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.1\">Whole wheat bread<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.2\">Canned soup<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.3\">Some canned beans and vegetables<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.4\">Cottage cheese<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.5\">Popcorn<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.6\">Salad dressings, condiments, and sauces<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.7\">Frozen meals<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.8\">Deli meats<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.9\">Vegetable juice<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.10\">Pickles<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"18.11\">Frozen shrimp<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bottom line<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">While the foods above may contain a sneaky high amount of sodium, that doesn\u2019t mean you need to cut them out of your diet entirely. \u201cAll of these foods can still be enjoyed in lower-sodium options,\u201d says Haire.
