{"id":646618,"date":"2026-08-20T03:55:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T03:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/646618\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T03:55:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T03:55:24","slug":"exercise-done-at-work-may-increase-dementia-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/646618\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise Done At Work May Increase Dementia Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Regular exercise has long been linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/exercise-volume-prevent-dementia_uk_67bdca07e4b0d58740864887\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"decreased dementia risk\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a856026e4b0e9f1dd26aefc\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"67bdca07e4b0d58740864887\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decreased dementia risk<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/taking-more-steps-a-day-might-reduce-dementia-risk#:~:text=Those%20who%20walked%20an%20average,Intensity%20offered%20extra%20protection.\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"A 2022 paper found \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a856026e4b0e9f1dd26aefc\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/taking-more-steps-a-day-might-reduce-dementia-risk#:~:text=Those%20who%20walked%20an%20average,Intensity%20offered%20extra%20protection.\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A 2022 paper found <\/a>that just 3,800 steps a day may reduce your likelihood of developing dementia by 25%, with increasing benefits up to 9,800 steps, for instance.<\/p>\n<p>And strength training has been shown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/news-opinion\/news\/2020\/02\/11\/strength-training-can-help-protect-the-brain-from-degeneration.html\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"to help protect the parts of the brain\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a856026e4b0e9f1dd26aefc\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/news-opinion\/news\/2020\/02\/11\/strength-training-can-help-protect-the-brain-from-degeneration.html\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to help protect the parts of the brain<\/a> particularly vulnerable to Alzheimer\u2019s, too.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/this-is-the-exact-time-of-day-you-should-be-working-out-at_uk_66435a86e4b0f22a60f30ab3\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"NHS recommends\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a856026e4b0e9f1dd26aefc\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"66435a86e4b0f22a60f30ab3\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS recommends<\/a> 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, 75 minutes of higher-intensity exercise, or a combination of both every week to help us see the benefits of movement. <\/p>\n<p>But a new paper has found that why we reach those goals might matter a lot more than we thought when it comes to dementia risk. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Exercise done at work may actually be linked to higher dementia risk <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The paper, published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=6348575\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"The Lancet\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a856026e4b0e9f1dd26aefc\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=6348575\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Lancet<\/a>, looked at data from 74 studies, involving 4.2 million participants overall. <\/p>\n<p>These participants were from 30 different countries and were aged between 45 and 93. On average, researchers tracked them for a decade. <\/p>\n<p>After analysing this data, the study authors found that exercising more often was linked to a 24% lower likelihood of developing dementia. <\/p>\n<p>But that only seemed to be the case for leisure-time activity and (maybe) housework. <\/p>\n<p>Those who exercised a lot due to physically demanding jobs appeared to face a 20% higher dementia risk, while active commuting (like cycling to work) seemed associated with a moderately higher risk too. <\/p>\n<p>Researcher Natan Feter, the study\u2019s first author, said: \u201cThe findings challenge the long-held assumption that \u2018every move counts\u2019 for brain health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>This may be part of the \u201cactivity paradox\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The authors of this meta-analysis suggested that this higher risk may be linked to factors common in very physical workplaces, rather than the movement itself.<\/p>\n<p>These factors might include stress, uncontrolled noise (hearing loss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/preventative-measures-dementia-by-age_uk_66decc9de4b0850940b55d66\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"has been associated with a greater likelihood of developing\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a856026e4b0e9f1dd26aefc\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"66decc9de4b0850940b55d66\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has been associated with a greater likelihood of developing<\/a> dementia), air pollution, and hazardous working conditions. <\/p>\n<p>This phenomenon \u2013 sometimes called \u201cthe activity paradox\u201d \u2013 has been seen in other research, too. <\/p>\n<p>Some studies have found that work-related exercise <a href=\"https:\/\/bmjpublichealth.bmj.com\/content\/3\/2\/e002164\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"may raise your risk of some health conditions\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a856026e4b0e9f1dd26aefc\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/bmjpublichealth.bmj.com\/content\/3\/2\/e002164\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">may raise your risk of some health conditions<\/a>, like heart problems, long-term sickness and related absences, and even an increased risk of death, although leisure-time activity lowers those same risks. <\/p>\n<p>And a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9203402\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"2021 paper found\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a856026e4b0e9f1dd26aefc\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9203402\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2021 paper found<\/a> that even the burnout-reducing potential of leisure-time activity might disappear when someone has a very physically demanding job.<\/p>\n<p>Pollution could also be a factor involved in why those engaging in \u2018active commuting\u2019 might experience a heightened risk. As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/managing-the-risk-of-dementia\/reduce-your-risk-of-dementia\/air-pollution\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Alzheimer\u2019s Society says:\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a856026e4b0e9f1dd26aefc\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/managing-the-risk-of-dementia\/reduce-your-risk-of-dementia\/air-pollution\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alzheimer\u2019s Society says:<\/a> \u201cExposure to a high level of air pollution increases a person\u2019s risk of developing dementia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor David Raichlen, who led the research team, said that we should therefore be considerate when issuing advice telling people to \u201cmove more\u201d without considering the context of activity. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to protecting the brain, the context of physical activity may matter just as much as movement itself,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImproving access to safe parks, walking trails and recreational facilities, ensuring people have adequate leisure time for exercise, and reducing harmful workplace exposures may ultimately prove as important as promoting physical activity itself.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Regular exercise has long been linked to decreased dementia risk.
