{"id":648213,"date":"2026-08-21T01:15:33","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T01:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/648213\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T01:15:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T01:15:33","slug":"dr-congo-to-receive-70000-doses-of-ervebo-vaccine-as-ebola-infections-surge-ebola-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/648213\/","title":{"rendered":"DR Congo to receive 70,000 doses of Ervebo vaccine as Ebola infections surge | Ebola News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">WHO says vaccines for Ebola virus disease being allocated to DRC amid largest outbreak that has killed nearly 2,500.<\/p>\n<p>By Anadolu, AP and Reuters<\/p>\n<p>Published On 20 Aug 202620 Aug 2026<\/p>\n<p>As the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) struggles to manage its largest outbreak of the Ebola virus, it is set to receive 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine which has been effective in previous epidemics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that the doses have been allocated from the global Ebola virus disease vaccine stockpile and would include 20,000 shots to be used in a late-stage trial \u200c\u200cto understand the impact of the vaccine on the Bundibugyo virus.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>Bundibugyo is responsible for the current outbreak, which has so far killed 2,476 people out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/8\/18\/congo-ebola-outbreak-global-emergency-as-infections-pass-5000-who\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">5,208<\/a> confirmed cases.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/8\/7\/ebola-cases-top-4000-in-drc-as-who-urges-ervebo-vaccine-trial\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ervebo vaccine<\/a> is licensed for use against the Ebola virus \u2013 one of the viruses that cause Ebola disease \u2013 but not for Bundibugyo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt \u2060\u2060is not known whether Ervebo may be \u2060\u2060protective against the Bundibugyo virus in humans,\u201d the WHO said, stressing the importance of clinical trials to provide new evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">To date, no vaccine or specific treatment has been approved for the Bundibugyo virus.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4870334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/afp_6a874510dda1-1787249936.jpg\" alt=\"Health workers stand in a new Ebola treatment center during a visit of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), in Bunia, in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
