\n\tGang of Youths <\/a>are back. This is not a drill.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe chart-topping, multiple ARIA Award winners have emerged from hibernation with \u201cThings Take Time\u201d (via Mosy Recordings \/ Sony Music Australia \/ RCA U.K. and Arista U.S.), the alternative rock act\u2019s first new music in four years.<\/p>\n

\n\tWritten by bandmates David Le\u2019aupepe, Tom Hobden, Donnie Borzestowski and Jung Kim, \u201cThings Take Time,\u201d with its orchestral flourishes, is a mature, more mellow version of a band that cut its teeth in Sydney\u2019s pub scene, and, by 2017<\/a>, had moved into position as one of Australia\u2019s preeminent rock bands.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThings Take Time\u201d is a meditation on patience, and the swings and roundabouts that are the playground of life. Of growth, decay, and regrowth. \u201cIt\u2019s in it\u2019s namesake, but it took a f\u2014ing long time to make a three-minute song,\u201d Kim tells Billboard with a laugh. \u201cIt took three years to make a three-minute song.\u201d Then, \u201clightning struck\u201d and the thunder followed as Le\u2019aupepe reached into his bag of tricks, chords came, and the song flowed.<\/p>\n

\n\tGoY\u2019s third and most recent studio album, 2022\u2019s Angel in Realtime, gave the band a second consecutive leader on the ARIA Albums Chart. The collection, which went on to win triple j\u2019s coveted J Award for Australian album of the year, was loaded with textures and ideas on \u201cIndigenous heritage and identity, family, god, life, death, grief, sport, forgiveness, and the Angel Islington,\u201d Le\u2019aupepe said at the time.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis next project is coming from a different place. \u201cThe lyrical content is quite a departure,\u201d says Hobden. \u201cRecords of old have obviously been centered around some very, very personal topics for him. And then suddenly he\u2019s facing an album where he doesn\u2019t really know what the lyrical thread is. It\u2019s a whole different approach to songwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs music took shape for this new era, Le\u2019aupepe spent time in Hobden\u2019s London garden studio, observing the good life flourish outside with the warmer seasons. \u201cHe was in there for many hours, many weeks, just chiseling away ideas,\u201d Hobden explains.<\/p>\n

\n\tLike Angel in Realtime, the next phase of GoY draws its DNA from multiple places and creative hearts. GoY produced the new single, recorded at Decoy Studios in Suffolk, east England, and engineered by Robert Sellens and Jung Kim (who also contributes guitar and keyboards).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s always been an ambition to make something quite grandiose, with very grandiose ideas,\u201d Kim explains, \u201cand it\u2019s reflected in very long arrangements and quite dense instrumentation. But this time around, it\u2019s very much stripping a lot of that away for the sake of just making music that actually makes this maybe feel at ease. And at comfort.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThose muscular recordings are \u201cnot about impressing,\u201d Hobden assures. \u201cIt\u2019s not about trying to be, in any way, part of the zeitgeist. In fact, that\u2019s almost a deterrent for us. Anything that sounds vaguely of the moment is automatically a big no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe fresh cut features Le\u2019aupepe on vocals and piano, Hobden on violin, Borzestowski on drums and Kim on guitar and keyboards, with additional contributions from Andrew Burgess (bass guitar), Nick Etwell (trumpet), Dave Williamson (trombone) and Klara Schumann (cello).<\/p>\n

\n\tGoY moved to London towards the end of 2017, and continues to call the capital a second home \u2014 a move that many Aussie artists have made before them, from The Saints and Go-Betweens, to INXS, Kylie Minogue, Nick Cave and others.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor GoY, that relocation coincided with the band\u2019s rise to the very top of Australia\u2019s rock culture, confirmation of which came when their sophomore album, Go Farther in Lightness, went to No. 1 on the national ARIA Chart, and they cleaned up at the ARIA Awards, collecting a stash that included best group and album of the year.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn London, the band could enjoy a fresh start, Le\u2019aupepe could fly under the radar with the world on their doorstep. There are no regrets. <\/p>\n

\n\tGoY are under new management as part of the roster of Red Light Management, where they\u2019re handled out of the U.K. by James Sandom and Al Mills. \u201cThe breath of energy that the new management bring is really exciting,\u201d enthuses Hobden. \u201cThey\u2019ve got loads of great ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat energy has spilled out onto the stage for a brief run of Australian shows<\/a> in August, including two dates at the iconic Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. There\u2019s more to come. That next, fourth album, well things take time. \u201cWe\u2019re just working away at it to be honest,\u201d Hobden admits. \u201cWe can\u2019t have a definitive answer or anything.
