{"id":648583,"date":"2026-08-21T06:19:20","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T06:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/648583\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T06:19:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T06:19:20","slug":"zimbabwean-pastor-brings-defamation-action-against-conor-mcgregor-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/648583\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwean pastor brings defamation action against Conor McGregor \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A Zimbabwean businessman and pastor has brought a defamation action against mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Co Meath-based Gerard Chimbganda on Thursday confirmed he had initiated a defamation suit against McGregor, but declined to comment further. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Chimbganda\u2019s lawyers, RDJ LLP, lodged papers initiating the action against McGregor in the High Court on Wednesday, records show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Chimbganda\u2019s Good People Homecare company was previously  at the centre of a controversy over forged Garda vetting certs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2025\/08\/22\/forged-garda-vetting-certs-at-private-firm-minding-vulnerable-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2025\/08\/22\/forged-garda-vetting-certs-at-private-firm-minding-vulnerable-children\/\">The Irish Times reported<\/a> how Good People Homecare supplied forged paperwork to Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, falsely clearing several employees to manage emergency accommodation for children in State care. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Gerard Chimbganda\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/TTV5ONBHIVBKZGDHICEEPCAZCU.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"420\"\/>Gerard Chimbganda <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tusla cut ties with the Co Meath company after it discovered criminal background checks of several staff had been doctored. The agency reported the suspected forgeries to the Garda, which opened an investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An employee of the Good People, a young relative of Chimbganda, was, in May last year, convicted of forgery and falsifying Garda vetting documentation, receiving a suspended sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time, Chimbganda said the case concerned a \u201cformer junior employee, who acted entirely alone,\u201d without the knowledge of management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McGregor has been involved in several High Court actions of late, most notably when he was sued by Nikita Hand, who claimed he had raped her in December 2018 in a Dublin hotel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A civil jury found in favour of Hand in that case, awarding her nearly \u20ac250,000 in damages. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McGregor unsuccessfully appealed the jury\u2019s finding to the Court of Appeal. The Supreme Court refused to hear a further appeal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last May, McGregor reached an out-of-court settlement with a former sparring partner in a dispute over his Proper No. Twelve whiskey brand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Artem Lobov had claimed McGregor failed to honour a 2017 oral commitment agreeing to Lobov\u2019s ownership of a 5 per cent share in the whiskey brand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Russian-born Lobov had asserted he was involved in the creation of the brand.
