\u2018I\u2019m fantastic, despite my age,\u2019 Jonathan Ross<\/a> says as we settle down for a chat. \u2018I\u2019m turning 66 this year. I shouldn\u2019t really be working.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Decades as the country\u2019s finest chat show host,<\/a> film critic, and most stylish Traitor to date<\/a>, and Wossy isn\u2019t slowing down just yet.<\/p>\n In fact Jonathan currently presents Classic FM\u2019s blockbuster film music programme, as well as weekly movie podcast Reel Talk alongside his daughter Honey. <\/p>\n Even his wife, Jane Goldman,<\/a> is in the industry, having worked on films including Kick Ass and X-Men: First Class. <\/p>\n If you haven\u2019t gathered yet, Jonathan loves film. And there\u2019s one controversial film opinion<\/a> that he\u2019ll defend no matter what.<\/p>\n Despite recently interviewing the man himself, the award-winning broadcaster insists: \u2018I\u2019m not part of the cult of Christopher Nolan<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t \t\t So much so that he was left \u2018begging for release\u2019 when watching 2023 award-winning biographical thriller Oppenheimer.<\/a><\/p>\n \u2018I do enjoy some of his movies, but I thought Oppenheimer was one of the most boring movies, one of the dullest experiences I\u2019ve ever had at the cinema,\u2019 Jonathan laughs.<\/p>\n \u2018The final third of that movie\u2026 I was begging for release. It has some incredible moments in it, so his skill as a filmmaker is beyond doubt and unquestionable. But I do think, as a writer, I find him wanting sometimes. And that was possibly my problem with The Odyssey<\/a> as well.\u2019<\/p>\n Jonathan, a lover of cult films, insists: \u2018Ultimately opinions, of course, are all valid. I do often find that I\u2019m very surprised by the movies that people rave about and the movies that get awards. Obviously, I like to think I\u2019m right and everyone else is wrong, but I\u2019m old enough to realise that\u2019s just vanity.\u2019<\/p>\n With a passion for music as well as film, Jonathan shared his love of Nolan\u2019s Hans Zimmer scores, but couldn\u2019t possibly choose between the composer and award-winning John Williams if he had to pick a favourite.<\/p>\n \u2018I\u2019m very angry that you\u2019ve asked me this question,\u2019 he laughs. \u2018I wouldn\u2019t want to never be able to hear the Harry Potter score again, or Star Wars, or Superman. But some of Zimmer\u2019s more interesting stuff, like his score for True Romance, The Thin Red Line, they were amazing. <\/p>\n \u2018As well as his Disney work, and his stuff with Nolan. The Interstellar score is extraordinarily good, as is Inception. I love it!\u2019<\/p>\n Classic FM\u2019s Margherita Taylor choice:<\/strong><\/p>\n Star Wars \u2013 John Williams<\/p>\n \u2018A long time ago, in a cinema far, far away\u2026 One of the best intros in music got me totally hooked on the power of film music. No doubt the Force helped too.\u2019<\/p>\n Reflecting on how much cinema has changed through the years, Jonathan looks back at his youth growing up in London and joining a film club in Gants Hill at the age of 14.<\/p>\n \u2018The world was such a different place. There weren\u2019t even VHS players when I was little, so you couldn\u2019t watch stuff on your own schedule,\u2019 he tells us.<\/p>\n And despite having lived through so many eras of film, Jonathan doesn\u2019t think we\u2019re in the golden age of cinema in 2026.<\/p>\n \u2018I remember in the 70s when you\u2019d see such a weird and broad variety of movies, some which you\u2019d never heard of, popping up at your local,\u2019 he explains.<\/p>\n \u2018You\u2019d get the big hitters like The Exorcist, Star Wars<\/a>, Alien, but you\u2019d also have films like Death Race 2000 from Roger Corman popping up, or Salon Kitty, or one memorable time I went to see a double bill, which was a kung fu film called When Taekwondo Strikes, coupled with a soft-core porn movie called Black Emmanuelle,\u00a0White Emmanuelle. Now, I\u2019m not saying either of them were classics, but certainly it was an interesting time to be a young person.\u2019<\/p>\n As for what\u2019s tickled his fancy at the cinema this year, he tells us: \u2018Obsession <\/a>was one of my favourites. I\u2019ve watched it three times now. The acting is great, especially Inde Navarrette.<\/a> It\u2019s just an interesting, immersive, unusual experience.<\/p>\n \u2018I enjoyed The Odyssey, but I didn\u2019t rave about it as much as others, but I did think it was a fun night out at the cinema.\u2019<\/p>\n Another hot topic in film right now, away from Nolan, is who the next James Bond<\/a> will be \u2013 although perhaps not for Jonathan.<\/p>\n \u2018I must admit, I\u2019m not terribly excited about seeing it,\u2019 he admits. <\/p>\n \t\t \u2018I\u2019ve always wanted to see a Bond that was shot in post-war Britain, the period when the books were written.\u2019<\/p>\n His pick for the next 007<\/a>, regardless? It\u2019s not one of the favourites Callum Turner or Jacob Elordi or even Jack Lowden.<\/p>\n \u2018I wouldn\u2019t mind seeing Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet,\u2019 he suggests.<\/p>\n Away from his obsession with film, Jonathan was hailed as \u2018one of the greatest Traitors\u2019 when he dipped his toe into the world of reality TV on The Celebrity Traitors last year.<\/p>\n \u2018Big Dog\u2019 Jonathan played a brazen game with Alan Carr<\/a> and Cat Burns<\/a> alongside him as conniving traitors, telling remaining contestants during his banishment in episode seven that they were \u2018idiots\u2019. But it\u2019s not all bad blood with the cast.<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t \u2018I still speak to all of them on and off. I\u2019m meant to be having lunch with Celia Imrie <\/a>quite soon. I organised a big Christmas lunch for all of us and we all got together. We had a really nice time,\u2019 he tells us.<\/p>\n Some of the new faces set to appear on the show<\/a> have even reached out to him for advice ahead of the new season airing later this year.<\/p>\n \u2018I spoke to quite a few of them before they went in. I had a brief chat with Michael Sheen<\/a>. I had a longer chat with Romesh Ranganathan<\/a> and Rob Beckett,<\/a> <\/a>Maya Jama<\/a>. Quite a few people called me and said they\u2019d been asked to do it, and we chatted through what the experience was like,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n \u2018I\u2019m always very honest because I did enjoy aspects of the experience and other things I really struggled with.
