Can Mikel Arteta finally fully release his team?

Many at Arsenal would insist this very performance was the great counter-argument to old perceptions. A 3-0 opening win over Coventry City was arguably their best expansive display of 2026, with the only real competition in the Premier League coming from a win by the same scoreline against Fulham in the run-in.

And it’s no coincidence that comes in just the second game this year – and, remarkably, just the second since December 2024 – when all of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz on the pitch. They all scored, and all from open play, to really emphasise the point.

Adding an extra bit of edge to all of this, meanwhile, was the player who supplied two of the goals. Christos Tzolis was a modest £34m signing from Club Brugge that was very easy to overlook, but you couldn’t but notice him here. He was electric, offering a directness that Arsenal have lacked. Tzolis just went for it. There was no ponderousness, no submission to “horseshoe” possession, no cutting back inside.

Havertz’s opening goal came from his ravenousness in pressing and Saka’s follow-up from Tzolis’ willingness to just run at defenders. Behold Greeks bearing gifts.

What was encouraging for Arteta was how he offered all the industry of Leandro Trossard while also indicating a bit more incision. Trossard of course scored a lot of crucial goals for Arsenal, to create a proper historic status at this club, and Tzolis evidently needs to work on his finishing before he can even think of that. There was still a lot here.

And that’s with Arteta also intent on signing another left-sided attacker. The question from this game will be whether they even need one, especially with poor Gabriel Martinelli just ousted from the squad. It was hard not to sense a message for the Brazilian, as Arsenal consider Juventus’s Kenan Yildiz.

Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal a decisive lead inside the first quarter of the game (PA Wire)

The question over whether more is needed would also be to overlook Arteta’s ruthless sense of relentlessness. He doesn’t just want to build a winning team. He wants to further bolster this squad that can repeatedly go the distance in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Hence Ezri Konsa was presented before the game. Many outside the club were questioning whether the centre-half was needed but Arteta felt it was a priority due to the awareness that one injury could leave them too thin for a schedule packed with constant midweek fixtures. It’s a different game now.

As for this game, the performance of course has to be put in the context of Arsenal facing a Coventry City playing their first Premier League fixture in 25 years. It was a punishing return, even if 3-0 does at least feel more respectable. Before half-time, it looked like it was going to be a lot worse.

There were also promising elements in amongst being constantly pressed. You could see how Jay Silva and Ellis Simms are going to have an impact in this division, especially with how the latter constantly tried to make Gabriel battle for every ball. One criticism you could have is that Coventry actually look a bit too physically leaden. We’ll still need to see more from the rest of the field to properly assess their chances.

Martin Odegaard and Arsenal were all smiles as they started their title defence with a comfortable win (PA Wire)

The reality with Arsenal, however, is that they had similar – and maybe even easier – games last season and found them much tougher. The two matches against Wolves, for example, were a 2-2 draw and a 2-1 win, the latter only secured through a desperate late own goal. There was certainly none of the assurance seen here.

Of course, that is something else that just comes with being champions, too. Arsenal have been released from an asphyxiating tension. A key was just that they were able to deploy the three players that most enjoy the freedom.

Arsenal were free-flowing going forward, in a way this crowd has largely missed for the last two seasons. It is ominous for the rest of an uncertain league, especially when the talk before hand was already of Arsenal retaining it.

In order to keep hold of the trophy, though, the bigger question is whether they can actually keep these players fit. That is their own great unknown, in a wider Premier League season full of unknowns.

There were positive signs for Frank Lampard’s Coventry despite the defeat (Getty)

Odegaard did look psychologically refreshed as much physically sharp, as if the success of Norway’s World Cup has had a similar individual effect for him as winning the title has for the team. Speaking of the World Cup, a sleek Saka brought back the questions over why Thomas Tuchel didn’t use him against Argentina. And, further back, Declan Rice looked like he greatly benefitted from a full three weeks rest. That was also without Bruno Guimaraes in the team.

There was a lot for Arsenal to enjoy, even if recent memories will condition this crowd to expect some imminent battles. The next two fixtures are tough, away to Aston Villa and home to Chelsea.

It’s just as well they started with such a performance. Back to their best, at least for now, to really show they can finally go back to back.

Your support helps us to tell the story From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The…

[3
274715,9,10,87060,196316,27125,274714,18,4507,2306,13,14,6,789,19,17,11251,11,12,194882,15,16,194887,89206,5,432,206274,196318,4335,196315,119,177982,274716,7,8,1294
post-649948","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-arsenal-f-c","tag-breaking-news","tag-breakingnews","tag-celebration","tag-club-soccer","tag-color-image","tag-coventry-city-f-c","tag-eire","tag-england","tag-english-premier-league","tag-featured-news","tag-featurednews","tag-headlines","tag-horizontal","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-kai-havertz","tag-latest-news","tag-latestnews","tag-london-england","tag-main-news","tag-mainnews","tag-match-sport","tag-motion","tag-news","tag-photography","tag-scoring","tag-scoring-a-goal","tag-soccer","tag-soccer-player","tag-sport","tag-stadium","tag-the-emirates-stadium","tag-top-stories","tag-topstories","tag-uk
["GET
