{"id":650288,"date":"2026-08-22T06:28:22","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T06:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/650288\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T06:28:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T06:28:22","slug":"three-argentina-players-receive-bans-over-world-cup-final-brawl-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/650288\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Argentina players receive bans over World Cup final brawl \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Three Argentina players have been banned for their part in a brawl at the end of last month\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/world-cup\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/world-cup\/\">World Cup<\/a> final against Spain, and the county has been fined for displaying a Falkland Islands banner after their semi-final win over England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Leandro Paredes received a 10-match ban and a $90,000 (\u20ac70,000) fine by Fifa\u2019s disciplinary committee, while Nahuel Molina was given a seven-match suspension and the same fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Thiago Almada received a one-match ban and a $30,000 (\u20ac25,700) fine, while a member of Argentina\u2019s coaching staff, Roberto Ayala, was banned for three matches and also fined $30,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For Spain, Gavi was hit with a one-match ban and a $30,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) was fined $321,000 (\u20ac275,000) concerning a banner displayed after the game against England, which read: \u201cLas Malvinas son Argentinas\u201d (the Falkland Islands are Argentinian). The fine also covered breaches of Fifa\u2019s anti-discrimination regulations by Argentina\u2019s supporters at other World Cup matches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For the discrimination offences, the AFA has been ordered to play the country\u2019s next home match at 50-per-cent capacity, with a 50-per-cent capacity restriction at a further match suspended.
