{"id":650336,"date":"2026-08-22T07:12:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T07:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/650336\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T07:12:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T07:12:19","slug":"rhys-mcclenaghan-misses-out-on-medal-in-european-championships-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/650336\/","title":{"rendered":"Rhys McClenaghan misses out on medal in European Championships final"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IRELAND\u2019S RHYS MCCLENAGHAN has missed out on a medal in the men\u2019s pommel horse final at the European Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb.<\/p>\n<p>The 27-year-old registered a score of 14.166 to finish seventh in the men\u2019s pommel horse final.<\/p>\n<p>McClenaghan had previously achieved\u00a014.400 to qualify for the final in fifth place.<\/p>\n<p>Italy\u2019s Gabriele\u00a0Targhetta won gold with a score of\u00a015.133.<\/p>\n<p>Armenia pair\u00a0Hamlet Manukyan (15.000) and Mamikon Khachatryan (14.900) claimed silver and bronze respectively.<\/p>\n<p>McClenaghan, the 2024 pommel horse Olympic champion, is not yet at 100%, having recently returned from injury and surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the event, the Newtownards native warned people not to expect too much for the final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI labelled the Commonwealth Games as a stepping stone. I\u2019m treating this as the same. It doesn\u2019t mean that I\u2019m giving it any less respect,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/sport\/olympic-sports\/newtownards-man-rhys-mcclenaghan-qualifies-for-european-final-after-impressive-pommel-horse-display-in-zagreb\/a\/160241920.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told reporters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still going for my best performance, but I have to realise that this is my current best, and I\u2019m wanting to build on that even more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m wanting to build difficulty, better my execution, and I know that that takes time. It\u2019s a bit of a process, so I look forward to continuing that progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, earlier, Eamon Montgomery finished seventh in the floor final with a score of\u00a013.533.<\/p>\n<p>The Belfast native had qualified for the final in sixth place with a score of 14.033.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn extremely high-class final, with an exceptional standard throughout,\u201d\u00a0Gymnastics Ireland Performance &amp; Technical Director Sally Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRhys McClenaghan and Eamon Montgomery both finished seventh in competitions of the highest quality in execution, with Eamon reaching his first European final \u2013 a brilliant achievement and a great reward for all his hard work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth performances demonstrate their excellent preparation as we look ahead to the World Championships in Rotterdam, where Rhys will compete pommel, and Eamon will compete on floor as both gymnasts have qualified through the World Cup route.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBest of luck to both of them!
