{"id":650574,"date":"2026-08-22T10:46:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T10:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/650574\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T10:46:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T10:46:16","slug":"nasas-nuclear-dragonfly-copter-to-search-for-signs-of-life-on-titan-a-lots-riding-on-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/650574\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA\u2019s nuclear Dragonfly copter to search for signs of life on Titan: &#8216;A lot&#8217;s riding on it&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>LAUREL, Md.\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Ralph Lorenz dreamed up the idea of flying a helicopter through Titan\u2019s thick methane-laden atmosphere back in 2000 in a speculative research paper and a cover story for New Scientist magazine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a fantasy,\u201d Lorenz said.<\/p>\n<p>A quarter-century later, that fantasy is turning into reality inside a 40-foot-tall clean room at the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jhuapl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory<\/a> just outside the Washington, D.C., Beltway. The Dragonfly spacecraft, a $3.3-billion nuclear-powered space-copter, has survived a decade of uncertain budgets and a shift in NASA priorities to become the space agency\u2019s last, large-scale planetary science mission, scheduled to blast off in July 2028 bound for Saturn\u2019s largest moon. <\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Ralph Lorenz.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787395574_530_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Ralph Lorenz is the Dragonfly mission\u2019s architect.<\/p>\n<p>(Ed Whitman \/ Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory)<\/p>\n<p>To meet that launch window, technicians in protective suits test electronics on the spacecraft\u2019s chassis, which resembles a gray metal box with four outstretched arms. Over the next few months, workers at APL will bolt on eight three-bladed rotors that will allow Dragonfly to fly several miles at a hop above the alien surface. Then comes a bevy of scientific instruments, a small nuclear engine, and shiny orange foam to keep the instruments warm in space.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 scientists, engineers and contract workers across the country are putting together pieces of Dragonfly, which \u2014 when finished \u2014 will be about the size of NASA\u2019s Perseverance Mars rover (or a Mini Cooper). <\/p>\n<p>Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Ca\u00f1ada Flintridge is also a partner in the mission, and will help design Dragonfly\u2019s complex flight path. JPL also manages the Deep Space Network \u2014 the global array of massive antennas that will transmit commands to the copter and receive data from Titan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDragonfly is special,\u201d Lorenz said. \u201cWe are going to a fundamentally interesting place, and there\u2019s rich potential for discovery there, and we\u2019re going to explore it in a very cool way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why Titan? It\u2019s super cold \u2014 minus-290 degrees Fahrenheit \u2014 and is surrounded by a methane atmosphere that condenses, forms clouds and drops rain onto methane lakes and rivers \u2014 the only place in the solar system besides Earth where liquid exists.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"An artist's rendering of Dragonfly collecting samples on the surface of Titan. \"   width=\"1200\" height=\"835\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787395575_819_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>An artist\u2019s rendering of Dragonfly preparing to sample and examine the surface of a landing site on Titan.<\/p>\n<p>(Steve Gribben \/ NASA\/Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory)<\/p>\n<p>Scientists speculate there may have been life on Titan\u2019s surface in the past, and a tiny chance that some kind of life might exist in the ocean of liquid water that exists 35 to 50 miles below the frozen surface.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife as we know it has a fairly restricted temperature domain that basically relies on liquid water, at least in small amounts, and Titan\u2019s surface is far too cold,\u201d Lorenz said. \u201cBut in the deep interior you do have habitable conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lorenz is the mission\u2019s architect, responsible for figuring out the atmosphere\u2019s turbulence, the hardness of the rocks for a sampling drill, and how much light will be available to allow Dragonfly\u2019s sensors to navigate. He reports to Elizabeth \u201cZibi\u201d Turtle, the mission\u2019s principal investigator and his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Turtle and Lorenz are seasoned hands in the planetary science world. They worked on the Cassini\/Huygens mission that explored Saturn and landed a small probe in 2005 on Titan\u2019s surface that fed back data for 72 minutes before it conked out.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"A man operates a drone in a grassy field. \"   width=\"1200\" height=\"798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787395575_428_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>A drone is put through its paces during development of the Dragonfly copter in May 2018. <\/p>\n<p>(Johns Hopkins APL)<\/p>\n<p>Turtle developed imaging instruments <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/science\/story\/2024-10-14\/nasa-jupiter-probe-launches-aboard-spacex-rocket\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aboard the Europa Clipper<\/a>, a NASA mission currently on its way to Jupiter\u2019s icy moon Europa, another intriguing location in the search for life. Turtle said Titan is like Earth in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe landscape would be very familiar to us if you were standing on the surface,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are these vast longitudinal dunes that are very much like the dunes in the Namib Desert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turtle is less hopeful about finding fingerprints of life on Titan. She notes that the hydrocarbons needed for life that we have on Earth are on Titan\u2019s frozen surface, while liquid water is buried 50 miles below. \u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to transport material through an ice crust that big,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Turtle said Dragonfly will be looking for signs of earthquakes or volcanoes that might allow hydrocarbons like methane to move between the surface and the ice-covered ocean. Its mission will last up to 40 months, giving scientists on Earth enough data to analyze for years.<\/p>\n<p>With the launch of NASA\u2019s $4.3-billion Nancy Grace Roman space telescope later this month, Dragonfly is the last big planetary mission left on the books, according to Casey Dreier, space policy analyst at the Planetary Society, a space-based nonprofit research organization based in Pasadena.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Scientists work on a space vehicle in a clean room.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787395576_869_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Engineer Jackson Banbury at Johns Hopkins APL inspects the motorized arm that attaches Dragonfly\u2019s high-gain antenna to the spacecraft. <\/p>\n<p>(Steve Gribben \/ NASA\/Johns Hopkins APL)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s very little else coming down the pipeline,\u201d Dreier said. \u201cSo a lot\u2019s riding on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration cut NASA\u2019s science mission budget in half in 2025, jeopardizing several planetary missions. Congress restored the money last year, but the Trump administration made similar cuts to NASA\u2019s 2026 science budget. The uncertainty in funding has put on hold future missions to Uranus, Venus and Enceladus, and a return of rock and soil samples from Mars, Dreier said.<\/p>\n<p>Dragonfly is a survivor, just like its insect namesake. Turtle and other scientists who have spent decades working on the mission will be on edge when it makes its two-hour descent to Titan\u2019s surface in 2034.<\/p>\n<p>She often considers what it would be like to stand on Titan\u2019s surface. Despite the cold, there\u2019s no radiation to worry about and only gentle 10 mph winds to disturb those dunes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty benign environment and well-protected,\u201d Turtle said. \u201cIt would be fascinating to explore and to consider, hang-gliding over the surface.
