{"id":650960,"date":"2026-08-22T16:32:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T16:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/650960\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T16:32:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T16:32:17","slug":"mychal-threets-cancels-ted-talk-after-mental-health-hospitalization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/650960\/","title":{"rendered":"Mychal Threets cancels TED talk after mental health hospitalization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The former Bay Area librarian, who is known online as Mychal the Librarian, was scheduled to speak at the organization\u2019s joy-themed event on Thursday, Aug. 27.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMychal has shared publicly that he is taking time to focus on his health and well-being,\u201d TEDxSanDiego organizers wrote in a joint\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DcT1GhZiNEW\/?igsi=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a> post with Threets on Friday, Aug. 21. \u201cWe fully support his decision to step away and get the care he needs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Threets discussed his mental health struggles candidly on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not okay. Maybe I\u2019ll never be okay. I\u2019m seeking help. Going to the (hospital) tomorrow,\u201d he posted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@mychal3ts\/post\/DcIKnnvFL_W\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Threads<\/a> on Monday, Aug. 17. \u201cIn this moment I am safe. By God\u2019s grace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday evening, Threets\u2019 friend and \u201cFront Desk\u201d author Kelly Yang shared an update on his condition via a joint Instagram reel post shared to both of their accounts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did speak with him today. He is alive. He just got out of the hospital,\u201d Yang said in the clip,. \u201cIt\u2019s been a really rough week but he has been taking it one step at a time, and I\u2019m really proud of him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Threets has spoken publicly about his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/popular-bay-area-librarian-resigns-mental-health-18685435.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mental health struggles<\/a> on several occasions and, in 2024, left his job at the Solano County Library to focus on his mental health. He later became PBS\u2019 first resident librarian, continuing his literacy advocacy by making children\u2019s videos, before taking on the \u201cReading Rainbow\u201d mantle from LeVar Burton, who hosted the original PBS show from 1983 to 2006.
