A fun fact about Fury Jr. is that his look is based on the Ultimate Universe’s Nick Fury. It’s also the same version that the Marvel Cinematic Universe uses, with the character’s appearance modelled exactly after Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal. Considering that the Marvel Studios version is more liked and recognizable than the original one, it makes sense that he’d be brought into the comics.

Some things about the character have changed, like he’s a lot younger and is a much better fighter. One thing that hasn’t been altered, however, is that you can’t trust him. That much became clear in the recent issue of the Marvel Comics crossover Avengers: Armageddon.

Avengers: Armageddon No. 3 creative team

The biggest point being made in Avengers: Armageddon is similar to the storyline of Civil War. Something catastrophic happened, and now the public is upset with superheroes running around unchecked. In this case, they went to a foreign country to fight Red Hulk. Then a loose cannon named David Colton (who’s more powerful than Carol Danvers) took all of the world’s nukes and threw them into the sun. And, if I’m being honest, while I trust the Avengers, I’d be worried if I were watching this happen.

In issue No. 3 of Avengers: Armageddon, Black Panther (T’Challa) learns that Nick Fury gave the U.N. Coalition a formula to be used against the Hulk. As T’Challa continued to press the issue, Fury revealed that the word S.H.I.E.L.D. now means something different. It now stands for “Strategic Human Intelligence, Enforcement and Logistic Defense,” and, once again, I’m not mad at what Nick Fury Jr. and the U.N. Coalition are doing.

Nick Fury was right… kind of

As a fan of superheroes who understood and agreed with Steve Rogers during Civil War, I get where Nick Fury is coming from. If the superpower community decided they ruled the world, there’s nothing regular humans can do. For example, in Mighty Avengers No. 5, Carol Danvers absorbed the power of a thermonuclear warhead and survived. The logical thing to do would be to find an equalizer. However, as any fan of the X-Men will tell you, that is a slippery slope.

Sentinels and power-dampening weapons were created specifically to control, hurt, and kill mutants, even if they did nothing wrong. Now, imagine all of the governments of Earth with access to this. There’s no way some governments wouldn’t use it for evil. Sadly, that’s not where it stops.

Once countries get it, someone like Red Skull or Wilson Fisk will purchase the tech. After that, it’s only a matter of time before small timers like Turk or Owl get bootleg versions of the weapons. Then they’ll sell it to anyone who can pay. The next thing you know, every small-time crook has a gun or bomb that can take Spider-Man’s powers away. Then, who’s left to protect the world from people like the Hood, Bullseye, and Thanos?

This may sound irrational, but something similar is happening with Kryptonite in DC Comics. A Green Kryptonite meteor landed on Earth, and now there are Green-K weapons and even earrings. And if it can happen in DC Comics, it can happen in Marvel.
