Guggenheim Foundation, according to multiple media reports, including<a href=\"https:\/\/artlyst.com\/guggenheim-sues-to-recover-picasso-stolen-more-than-60-years-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> Artlyst magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Incredibly, in 2023, a researcher at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/en\/calendar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Christie\u2019s auction house <\/a>evaluating a possible private sale of a 13.5- by 10.5-inch painting for owners Lawrence Jay Handler and Wendy Cohen Handler made a shocking discovery \u2014 it was<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/12\/18\/lifestyle\/adorable-dog-with-wonky-face-compared-to-picasso-masterpiece\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> the missing Picasso<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Picasso\u2019s 1918 \u201cFemme dans un fauteuil,\u201d which was stolen in 1961 while on loan to the University of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of the Pitt News, the student newspaper at the University of Pittsburgh, features the story of the stolen Picasso from 1961. University of Pittsburgh<\/p>\n<p>The discovery was reported to the Guggenheim \u2014 and all hell broke loose, turning into a tug-of-war between the Handlers and the museum, which formally demanded the couple give it up, <a href=\"https:\/\/iapps.courts.state.ny.us\/nyscef\/ViewDocument?docIndex=BEITC2h1wCyAJagvVrD4lg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to the lawsuit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The case of the missing <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/15\/world-news\/picasso-painting-worth-1m-won-by-paris-man-with-117-raffle-ticket\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Picasso began<\/a> on Feb. 6, 1961, when a University of Pittsburgh student reported the heart-stopping heist from the Student Union building, where it was on display with other works and due to be returned to the Guggenheim at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>Police and the FBI launched an investigation, a $100 reward was offered and museums across North America were alerted. At the time, the work was estimated to be worth as much as $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>Then \u2014 nothing happened. For 62 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/15\/us-news\/picasso-etching-torero-stolen-from-milwaukee-art-gallery-found-in-vacant-apartment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the tiny Picasso<\/a> seemingly disappeared off the face of the Earth.<\/p>\n<p>After the Christie\u2019s researchers discovery, the Guggenheim officially demanded it back, according to court papers.<\/p>\n<p>The Handlers  refused. They\u2019d bought the work in 1999 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artist-info.com\/users\/publicpagegallery\/3595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Beadleston Fine Art, a Manhattan gallery<\/a> that closed in 2002, according to court papers.<\/p>\n<p>The Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side wants their Picasso back. Helayne Seidman for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 10, the Guggenheim<a href=\"https:\/\/iapps.courts.state.ny.us\/nyscef\/ViewDocument?docIndex=BEITC2h1wCyAJagvVrD4lg==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> filed a lawsuit<\/a> in New York State Supreme court insisting on the painting\u2019s return \u2014 plus $3.5 million in damages.<\/p>\n<p>Court papers do not establish that the Handlers knew the painting had been stolen.<\/p>\n<p>But the Guggenhaim says their ownership trail is crystal clear.<\/p>\n<p>Founder Solomon R. Guggenheim bought <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/14\/world-news\/picasso-painting-will-be-raffled-off-in-paris-in-april\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the masterpiece<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artbiogs.co.uk\/2\/galleries\/zwemmer-gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">London\u2019s Gallery Zwemmer<\/a> in 1936, and he was recorded as its owner in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/buy\/auction\/2025\/books-manuscripts-and-music-from-medieval-to-modern-l25404\/christian-zervos-pablo-picasso-oeuvres-1949-1986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Christian Zervo\u2019s 1949 Picasso catalog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A Guggenheim spokesperson told The Post, \u201cWe have attempted to settle the matter with the individuals holding the work. The Guggenheim is and always has been the painting\u2019s rightful owner, and we look forward to its recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pablo Picasso, here in his Paris studio, created an estimated 50,000 total works of art during his 78-year career.
