Try to block out the moon to see some of the stars that form the \u201carrowhead\u201d shape. You can catch them until around dawn. To its upper left is <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/speed-on-to-spica-the-15th-brightest-star\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Spica<\/a>, the brightest star in <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/virgo-heres-your-constellation\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgo<\/a> the Maiden. By month\u2019s end, Spica will have dropped much closer to Venus. Venus will reach its <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/venus-after-sunset-greatest-elongation\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">greatest distance from the sun on August 14-15<\/a>. The dot of Mars lies above them all.\" width=\"800\" height=\"453\" class=\"size-full wp-image-552866\"  \/>In the first half of August, Mars will rise out of the morning twilight and will lie near the star <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/betelgeuse-will-explode-someday\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Betelgeuse<\/a> and the twin stars of <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/gemini-heres-your-constellation\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gemini<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/tonightpost\/brightest-stars\/best-castor-brightest-second-magnitude-star\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Castor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/pollux-not-castor-is-geminis-brightest-star\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Pollux<\/a>. In the second half of the month, Mars along with Castor and Pollux will have climbed higher above the horizon. The bright star <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/procyon-harbringer-of-the-dog-star\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Procyon<\/a> will also join them above the eastern horizon. They are all above a wavy line, the horizon.\" width=\"800\" height=\"453\" class=\"size-full wp-image-552854\"  \/>From the Northern Hemisphere, on the first few mornings of August, Mercury will be near the twin stars of <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/gemini-heres-your-constellation\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gemini<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/tonightpost\/brightest-stars\/best-castor-brightest-second-magnitude-star\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Castor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/pollux-not-castor-is-geminis-brightest-star\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Pollux<\/a>. By August 10, Mercury will brighten and lie below them, forming a straight line with the twin stars. After August 15, for a few days, Mercury can be seen below Jupiter before disappearing in the bright morning twilight. Then during the second half of the month, Jupiter will steadily climb higher each morning. And Mars will be to its upper left. Need help finding it? Look toward the constellation <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/cygnus-the-swan-milky-way\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Cygnus<\/a> the Swan. You might know this constellation by its <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/definition-what-is-a-constellation-asterism\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">asterism<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/favorite-star-patterns\/the-northern-cross-backbone-of-the-milky-way\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Cross<\/a>. The Swan swims along the Milky Way. Its brightest star is <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/deneb-among-the-farthest-stars-to-be-seen\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Deneb<\/a>, the Swan\u2019s Tail. Additionally, the constellation Cygnus contains one of the most beloved <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/double-stars-observing-guide\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">double stars<\/a> in the sky, <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/albireo-finest-double-star\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Albireo<\/a>, which appears blue and gold. It consists of a triangle and a parallelogram. Its brightest star is <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/vega-brilliant-blue-white-is-third-brightest-star\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Vega.<\/a> Then, look next to it for the famous Double Double Star, <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/epsilon-lyrae-the-famous-double-double-star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Epsilon Lyrae<\/a>. It\u2019s really 4 stars in all. In addition, you can use Aquila to starhop your way to the <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/clusters-nebulae-galaxies\/wild-duck-cluster-deep-sky-gem-by-eagles-tail\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Duck Cluster<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/constellation-scutum-named-for-a-polish-king\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Scutum<\/a> the Shield. So the Summer Triangle is big! A 12-inch (30 cm) ruler, placed at an arm\u2019s length from your eye, will span the approximate distance from Vega to <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/altair-the-bluish-jewel-of-the-eagle\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Altair<\/a>. And an outstretched hand with thumb and pinky spread will fill the gap between Vega and <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/deneb-among-the-farthest-stars-to-be-seen\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Deneb<\/a>. You can see the Summer Triangle in the evening from around May through the end of every year. John is past president of the Astronomical League, the largest U.S. federation of astronomical societies, with over 24,000 members. Deborah created the EarthSky radio series in 1991 and founded EarthSky.org in 1994. Prior to that, she had worked for the University of Texas McDonald Observatory since 1976, and created and produced their Star Date radio series. She has won a galaxy of awards from the broadcasting and science communities, including having an asteroid named in her honor in 1990, a Public Service Award from the National Science Board in 2003, and the Education Prize from the American Astronomical Society in 2020.
