after it was targeted in an alleged attack in <a aria-label=\"Shannon AirportLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishmirror.ie\/all-about\/shannon-airport\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Shannon Airport<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">We have learned that US military chiefs offered the 34-year-old C-130 Hercules to Ireland because they adjudged it unsuitable to go back in to service following <a aria-label=\"the alleged attack at the Co Clare airport earlier this yearLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishmirror.ie\/news\/irish-news\/crime\/man-40s-arrested-over-alleged-36999840\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">the alleged attack at the Co Clare airport earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A peace activist is currently before the courts and charged with causing criminal damage to the US Air National Guard plane at Shannon on April 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He is also charged with trespass at the site and another charge of criminal damage to an airport perimeter fence on the same date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The plane, which was flying to Poland from America and had stopped off at Shannon when the alleged attack happened &#8211; especially for rehearsals for storming aircraft in a hostage incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">There was also a suggestion that the plane could be repaired and added to the Air Corps fleet, but sources said that was ruled out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Military sources said bosses decided not to add it to their fleet as the Air Corps did not have any other C-130s in its inventory of planes.
