{"id":652569,"date":"2026-08-23T17:44:38","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T17:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/652569\/"},"modified":"2026-08-23T17:44:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T17:44:38","slug":"dissolvable-3d-printed-patch-aims-to-improve-skin-cancer-treatment-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/652569\/","title":{"rendered":"Dissolvable 3D-printed patch aims to improve skin cancer treatment \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A new dissolvable 3D-printed patch has been developed by researchers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\">Belfast<\/a> with the aim of improving treatment for localised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/skin-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/skin-cancer\/\">skin cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The patch has been developed by researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/queens-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/queens-university\/\">Queen\u2019s University Belfast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The small patch contains tiny microneedles that can pass through the outer layer of the skin without drawing blood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The microneedles can deliver two anti-cancer drugs, curcumin and 5-fluorouracil, for potential use in people with localised skin cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Researchers have said that by delivering medicine straight to the affected area, it provides a more targeted medicine delivery and could help reduce the need for repeated topical treatments, or more invasive procedures such as injections \u2013 making skin cancer treatment less painful and easier for patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The research was carried out by Rutuja N Meshram, a final-year PhD student, and Prof Dimitrios A Lamprou, chair of biofabrication and advanced manufacturing, both from the school of pharmacy at Queen\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lamprou said: \u201cSkin cancer is a major public health concern, and current treatments often require repeated topical applications, invasive procedures, or can cause unwanted side effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMany people also experience fear, discomfort, or inconvenience when treatments involve needles and injections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMinimally invasive microneedle systems that dissolve after application could provide a more patient-friendly, simpler and less painful way to deliver cancer medicines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBecause the microneedles dissolve after use, they may also help reduce the risk of needle-stick injuries and decrease medical sharps waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Prof Dimitrios A Lamprou.
