CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER Mark Carney has announced retaliatory tariffs on the United States, after walking away from a \u201cbad deal\u201d on trade in a deepening rift between the longtime allies.<\/p>\n
He said that \u201cAmerica has changed\u201d and that \u201cits signature was written in pencil\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Negotiations between the neighbouring countries broke down on Friday in Washington, putting into force new 50% US tariffs impacting about $20 billion (\u20ac17.1 billion) worth of goods, or 5.5% of Canadian exports to the United States.<\/p>\n
Impacted products range from hockey sticks to cement.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n
US President Donald Trump hit back at Canada on Sunday, saying, \u201cCanada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!\u201d Trump added in a post on Truth Social.<\/p>\n
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Canada would come out worse from tussling with Trump in a trade war.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re great trading partners, right? But Canada gets the benefit of trading with the US way more than the US gets the benefit of trading with Canada,\u201d he told the \u201cFox News Sunday\u201d talk show.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo think that they\u2019re going to go to war with Donald Trump and actually win that war with the US, I think it\u2019s foolish on their part.\u201d<\/p>\n
He predicted that Carney would return to negotiations \u201cvery very quickly, because it\u2019s going to be devastating for his country.\u201d<\/p>\n
New Canadian tariffs will notably target the US steel and dairy industries and take effect on 8 September. More details would come next week, Carney said.<\/p>\n
Trump had previously said Washington \u201cshould be able to have a deal with Canada,\u201d citing his \u201cgood relationship\u201d with Carney.<\/p>\n
But on Saturday, Canada\u2019s prime minister said Trump set conditions that were ultimately unacceptable even though earlier talks had been positive.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn recent days, the United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair and undermined the net benefits for Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal,\u201d Carney said in Ottawa.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot accept what they\u2019ve offered, and we will not give what they\u2019ve asked.\u201d<\/p>\n
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told the New York Times on Saturday that the US had offered to reduce its tariffs on steel, aluminium and autos, as well as eliminate a recently imposed tariff on Canadian lumber.<\/p>\n
Greer said those measures would have given Canada \u201cthe most preferential treatment of any trading partner,\u201d according to the Times.<\/p>\n
Greer told Fox News on Saturday that Washington was \u201cmoving forward with measures that respond to Canadian retaliation.\u201d He said no new talks were planned with Canadian negotiators.<\/p>\n
A senior US official characterised this week\u2019s talks in Washington as candid and not acrimonious.\n<\/p>\n
\u2018Significant pressure\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
Canada has been seeking relief from Trump\u2019s tariffs on autos, steel and aluminium, which have battered the country\u2019s economy, forced job losses and strained what was once an iron-clad trade relationship.<\/p>\n
The White House had alleged \u201cdiscriminatory treatment\u201d by Canada against US alcohol, automobile and dairy products in introducing the duties.<\/p>\n
They were originally set to take effect on Wednesday, before Trump issued a three-day reprieve citing progress in talks.<\/p>\n
Carney said one reason the deal collapsed was US negotiators at the 11th hour introducing restrictions on Canadian trade deals with other countries.<\/p>\n
US negotiators also made unacceptable \u201cthreats\u201d to the French language and \u201cQuebec culture,\u201d he said, referring to the French-speaking province in eastern Canada.<\/p>\n
The escalating trade war was met with anger by Democratic lawmakers and governors from border states including Minnesota, New York and Washington, who blamed Trump for triggering chaos that will raise costs on US businesses and families.<\/p>\n
\u201cNeedlessly picking fights with our allies and raising prices here at home. That\u2019s Trump\u2019s economic policy in a nutshell,\u201d New York Governor Kathy Hochul posted on X.<\/p>\n
Beyond the latest tariffs, the US and Canada still have to agree on revisions to the North American free trade agreement, USMCA, which Trump declined to renew in its current form.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s threats to make Canada the 51st US state have also antagonised Canadians.<\/p>\n

Carney has repeatedly said relations with the US have been forever altered, and that Canada must reduce reliance on its southern neighbour, which currently accounts for roughly 70% of Canadian exports.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been under no illusions. We recognised from the start that America has changed,\u201d Carney said Saturday. \u201cWe recognise that sometimes, its signature was written in pencil.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carney spoke with provincial leaders to outline next steps.<\/p>\n
One of them, Ontario premier Doug Ford, said Canadians must remain united.<\/p>\n
Trump \u201ccan\u2019t be trusted, simple as that,\u201d Ford told reporters. \u201cPresident Trump is the type of person who would steal your lunch money.\u201d<\/p>\n
