A24 hasn\u2019t given out an official budget for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/film\/\" id=\"auto-tag_film\" data-tag=\"film\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a>, but a source with knowledge of the production pegs it at less than $15 million. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTony\u201d opened on August 7 in just six theaters before expanding to 37 venues last weekend. It has earned an impressive $6.6 million since it debuted, fueled by <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/tony-movie-review-anthony-bourdain-1235207248\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/tony-movie-review-anthony-bourdain-1235207248\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strong reviews<\/a> and (presumably) affection for Bourdain, whose food and travel shows, as well as his book \u201cKitchen Confidential,\u201d made the irascible, insatiably curious chef an icon. Dominic Sessa, who impressed critics in \u201cThe Holdovers,\u201d stars as Bourdain, alongside\u00a0Emilia Jones,\u00a0Dagmara Domi\u0144czyk,\u00a0Leo Woodall, and\u00a0Antonio Banderas.<\/p>\n<p>A24 has had a sizzling summer at the box office, releasing hits like the sex comedy \u201cThe Invite\u201d ($25.5 million) and the YouTube-influenced \u201cBackrooms\u201d ($396.6 million globally). Only \u201cThe Death of Robin Hood,\u201d a moody fable about the titular outlaw\u2019s final days that featured Hugh Jackman at his most grizzled, failed to connect. It topped out at $8.7 million. <\/p>\n<p>Other indie releases weren\u2019t as lucky as \u201cTony.\u201d Black Bear saw \u201cThe Rivals of Amziah King\u201d fall flat in its second weekend, earning $285,000\u00a0from\u00a0465 theaters domestically. The film, which stars Matthew McConaughey, has grossed $1.8 million. Black Bear fared better with \u201cSpa Weekend,\u201d a girls trip comedy with Leslie Mann, Anna Faris, and Isla Fisher that debuted to just over $3 million\u00a0from 2,009 domestic locations. The hope there is that the film\u2019s older audience will continue to show up in subsequent weekends \u2014 it\u2019s a crowd that gets to movies \u2026 eventually. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere Vertical\u2019s \u201cThe Magic Faraway Tree,\u201d a family film with Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy that\u2019s adapted from a book series, debuted to $1.4 million from 1,611 theaters, while Neon rolled out the horror film \u201cIt Ends\u201d in five screens where it earned $60,000. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Audiences like what \u201cTony\u201d is cooking up.
