{"id":653426,"date":"2026-08-24T07:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T07:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/653426\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T07:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T07:28:11","slug":"rathwood-receives-more-consumer-complaints-than-ryanair-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/653426\/","title":{"rendered":"Rathwood receives more consumer complaints than Ryanair \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The troubled homes and garden retailer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rathwood-home-and-garden-world\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rathwood-home-and-garden-world\/\">Rathwood<\/a> was the most complained-about company in Ireland in the first six months of the year, a new report indicates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It came up almost three times more often in calls to the consumer watchdog than the company in second place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All told, Rathwood was identified in 737 calls to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/competition-and-consumer-protection-commission-ccpc\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/competition-and-consumer-protection-commission-ccpc\/\">Competition and Consumer Protection Commission<\/a> (CCPC) between January and June, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryanair\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryanair\/\">Ryanair<\/a> featuring on 238 occasions, 10 ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sky\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sky\/\">Sky<\/a> in third position. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/currys\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/currys\/\">Currys<\/a> on 223 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/harvey-norman\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/harvey-norman\/\">Harvey Norman<\/a> on 196 rounded out the top five most complained-about companies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In April, Rathwood announced it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2026\/04\/25\/rathwood-goes-into-examinership-says-it-is-not-in-a-position-to-issue-customer-refunds\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2026\/04\/25\/rathwood-goes-into-examinership-says-it-is-not-in-a-position-to-issue-customer-refunds\/\">seeking the appointment of an examiner<\/a> to try to secure its financial future.  It subsequently emerged that as many as 7,000 customers had ordered and paid for products the company was not in a position to deliver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The High Court heard the company had total liabilities of more than  \u20ac21 million. At the end of July <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/31\/rathwood-rescue-plan-saving-82-jobs-confirmed-by-the-high-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/31\/rathwood-rescue-plan-saving-82-jobs-confirmed-by-the-high-court\/\">a rescue plan was confirmed<\/a> which will see an external investor come on board and new management take control, allowing it to continue trading and save 62 jobs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A total of 22,724 consumers contacted the CCPC helpline in the first six months of the year, with key issues being faulty goods, pricing and contract performances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The main sectors prompting concern were vehicles and transport, utilities and fuel, and homebuilding and improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Consumers spent an average of \u20ac6,473 on the products or services that caused them difficulties, with the report pointing to a jump of 34 per cent in contacts related to online purchases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2026\/08\/11\/a-currys-customers-extremely-exhausting-and-frustrating-glitchy-phone-experience\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A Currys customer\u2019s \u2018extremely exhausting and frustrating\u2019 glitchy phone experienceOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CCPC\u2019s newly appointed director of communications Aoibh\u00edn de B\u00farca said it was important that consumers know their rights if they buy something that turns out to be faulty. \u201cRegardless of whether you had a warranty or a guarantee, it\u2019s up to the seller to resolve your issue, not the manufacturer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The research highlighted that \u201cwhen consumers are armed with the information we give them, they can get the replacements, repairs and refunds due to them\u201d, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A total of 91 per cent of consumers \u201ctook action following calls to the helpline and nearly 40 per cent were resolved\u201d, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However,  almost half said  they had to contact retailers  more than five times without having the issues resolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">De B\u00farca said if the CCPC identifies breaches of the law, it will act. \u201cBased on calls to our helpline we can and do take action. In July, with the help of intelligence received by the helpline, the CCPC secured the return of \u20ac250,000 in unspent gift card credit to Irish consumers by JD Sports,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd in the last 18 months we have taken successful prosecutions against six major retailers and two second-hand car dealers for misleading consumers. So, we strongly encourage consumers to alert us when they see breaches of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/education\/2026\/08\/15\/school-devices-parents-feel-press-ganged-into-something-we-dont-want-and-cant-afford\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School devices: Parents feel \u2018press-ganged into something we don\u2019t want and can\u2019t afford\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She welcomed a Government commitment to give the CCPC new powers to impose fines for breaches of consumer protection laws, but  called for the fines to be higher \u201cto deter businesses from breaking the law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CCPC referred almost 6,000 callers to the Small Claims Court in the first half of the year, a record number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the process is only intended for claims of up to \u20ac2,000. \u201cMany consumers, especially those with issues with cars or home improvements, are automatically excluded from the option  due to the low claim threshold,\u201d de B\u00farca said.
