Six Irish restaurants<\/a> have been added to the Michelin Guide<\/a>, marking a significant expansion of local names on the respected list.<\/p>\n

Michelin inspectors added three Dublin<\/a> restaurants \u2013 Mongoose<\/a>, D\u00edon<\/a> and China Hunan<\/a> \u2013 to the guide, and three outside the capital: Bear\u00fa<\/a> in New Ross, Co Wexford, d Grain Store<\/a> at Killruddery in Bray, Co Wicklow and The Universal in Galway.<\/p>\n

Inclusion in the Michelin Guide does not equate to a star or Bib Gourmand, with these awarded at a ceremony held at the start of each year. It is nonetheless an influential recommendation generally viewed as a boost to a restaurant\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n

Mongoose, the bistro opened in April by the Higgs brothers behind Michelin-starred Variety Jones<\/a>, received a particularly enthusiastic Michelin entry. The guide said diners would \u201cbe left struggling to choose between mightily appealing dishes\u201d. Dubliners acquainted with Variety Jones next door in Dublin 8 would be \u201chead over heels\u201d with Mongoose, inspectors said. D\u00edon, which opened at the top of the old Central Bank on Dame Street just before Christmas last year, offers a \u201ckeen sense of place\u201d, inspectors said. They highlighted the modern restaurant\u2019s cocktail offering and described its brasserie-style dishes as \u201cpolished\u201d. Read our review here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just outside the city centre, Michelin gave a nod to Ranelagh Chinese restaurant China Hunan, which inspectors said offered \u201can air of understated glamour\u201d. As well as skill in the kitchen, they noted \u201cgenerous portions\u201d, which they said ensure good value for money. Read our review here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bear\u00fa in New Ross is \u201cproudly run\u201d by chef and co-owner Dave Rowley, said Michelin. The new guide entry notes that Bear\u00fa offers breakfasts and lunch during the day, and restaurant-style fare on Friday and Saturday nights. Inspectors appreciated dishes that \u201cburst with flavour thanks to the superb quality of the ingredients\u201d. Read our review here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Outside Bray, Michelin found Grain Store at Killruddery, headed by chef Niall O\u2019Sullivan, to be \u201ca charming, rustic restaurant\u201d in a \u201ccharacterful space\u201d. Inspectors said the cooking here has \u201ca classic heart\u201d and highlighted dishes such as Wine Tavern pork croquettes and black pudding and burnt apple pur\u00e9e. Galway restaurant The Universal was also added to the guide, with inspectors describing a \u201cperiod pub\u201d with \u201ca welcoming atmosphere and full-flavoured food\u201d.
