The hosepipe ban<\/a> has been extended until the end of September for 13 counties across Munster and Leinster, as \u201cpublic water supplies remain under pressure and require continued protection\u201d, Uisce \u00c9ireann<\/a> has said.<\/p>\n

The ban, officially called a \u201cwater conservation order\u201d, will be extended until September 30th across counties Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.<\/p>\n

Those living in these counties are prohibited from using a hosepipe \u201cor similar equipment\u201d to water their gardens, clean their cars or fill a swimming or paddling pool, among other restrictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cUisce \u00c9ireann is asking customers in these 13 counties to continue avoiding non-essential water use,\u201d the semi-State company said. \u201cThe extension will help conserve available water and protect supplies for homes, businesses, farms, hospitals, vulnerable customers and essential services.\u201d<\/p>\n

The order will be lifted for the rest of the State \u2013 in counties Cavan, Clare, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath \u2013 from midnight on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

This is \u201cfollowing an improvement in the availability of water for supply and increased rainfall\u201d, according to Uisce \u00c9ireann. The company says it is \u201dcontinuing to take operational measures to maintain supplies\u201d.<\/p>\n

These measures include \u201cmaximising water production, repairing leaks<\/a>, moving water by tanker where necessary and managing the network to reduce the risk of outages\u201d.<\/p>\n

The order was first implemented in Dublin and parts of Kildare, Meath, Tipperary, Wexford and Wicklow on July 16th, before being extended nationwide on July 24th.<\/p>\n

It applies only to domestic users of Uisce \u00c9ireann\u2019s water supply \u2013 commercial activity was exempt from any formal water conservation orders, although businesses were advised not to needlessly use water while national supplies were depleted. <\/p>\n

Tycho Mays, who established the Howbert and Mays garden centres in Dublin alongside his wife in 2002, said there has been a \u201chuge slow-down in plant sales\u201d since the order was put in place. <\/p>\n

\u201cWho\u2019s going to buy plants if you\u2019re not allowed to water them?\u201d he asked. \u201cAnd even if you are allowed to water them, you run the risk of them dying.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure it\u2019s knocked our sales back massively \u2013 I don\u2019t have a number, [but] I\u2019m sure it\u2019s 30, 40, 50 per cent down in terms of selling plants since mid-July to mid-August. They\u2019re literally hardly selling,\u201d he went on. <\/p>\n

Mays said the downturn \u201cdoesn\u2019t mean the kiss of death\u201d for the business as \u201cwe have enough other things to sell\u201d in their shop next to Merrion Square.<\/p>\n

Uisce \u00c9ireann\u2019s head of water operations, Margaret Attridge, said the utility company \u201creceived great support from the public for our water conservation appeal, which has helped reduce demand significantly in many areas\u201d.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cThe collective efforts of communities to reduce unnecessary water use have made a real difference in protecting our essential supplies … The improvement in conditions means we can now lift the order across many counties.\u201d<\/p>\n
