US president Donald Trump<\/a> sought to increase pressure on Canada on Monday, warning that US tariffs<\/a> on all cars, trucks and automotive parts from its northern neighbour would be increased to 50 per cent starting on January 1st after trade talks collapsed over the weekend. <\/p>\n

The trade deal on the table would have cut the top-line tariff rate on Canadian cars and light-duty trucks from 25 per cent to 15 per cent and the tariffs on aluminium and steel from 50 per cent to 25 per cent, but the deal collapsed on Friday over \u200bseveral points of contention including whether the US tariff relief would have applied to medium or heavy-duty trucks. <\/p>\n

\u201cBuild in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada \u2060will be treated like a State no longer!\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the \u200cworst Nations \u200cin \u200bthe World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON\u2019T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!\u201d said Trump. <\/p>\n

Canada has consistently been one of the top two US trading partners and last year, US \u2060goods and services trade with Canada totalled $872.3 billion (\u20ac747.64 billion), down 4.6 per cent.<\/p>\n

Canada \u200bexported more than three-quarters of its goods to the US and imported almost \u200bhalf of its goods from there. US auto production is heavily integrated with Canada and Mexico and the tariffs \u2013 depending on the specifics \u2013 \u200ccould have drastic effects on US production. <\/p>\n

Flavio Volpe, the \u200bpresident of Canada\u2019s Automotive Parts Manufacturers\u2019 Association, said: \u201cA threatened US tariff on Canadian auto parts will be paid by [the] US auto assembly. Without \u2060those specific parts, auto assembly throughout the US would halt.\u201d <\/p>\n

The \u2060White House did not immediately \u200brespond to a request for comment seeking more details on the threatened tariffs. Representatives for the Canadian government also did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n

Canada will impose tariffs on some US goods starting on September 8th in retaliation for 50 per cent levies ordered by Trump on $20 billion in Canadian products. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked,\u201d said Canadian prime minister Mark Carney on Saturday when asked whether Canada was engaged in a trade war. Many carmakers have announced or are considering plans to scale back Canadian auto production and the trade standoff has led to a 22 per cent reduction in Canadian imports of \u200cUS vehicles. Big carmakers did not immediately \u2060comment on Trump\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n

But auto executives raised scepticism about Trump\u2019s threat, noting that the president has previously announced large tariffs that never materialised and that any tariff of that size would likely \u200cspark a big Canadian retaliation.<\/p>\n

They also noted that January was months after November\u2019s midterm elections and that Trump\u2019s threat could be aimed at restarting talks.<\/p>\n

In January, Trump said the \u200bUnited States would decertify Bombardier Global Express business jets and threatened 50 per cent import tariffs on all aircraft made \u200bin Canada until the country\u2019s regulator certified a number of planes produced by US rival Gulfstream. Neither occurred, but the following month Canada certified several Gulfstream planes. \u2013 Reuters<\/p>\n
