{"id":654858,"date":"2026-08-25T02:23:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T02:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/654858\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T02:23:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T02:23:19","slug":"half-of-irelands-grid-scale-electricity-generated-last-year-came-from-renewable-sources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/654858\/","title":{"rendered":"Half of Ireland\u2019s grid-scale electricity generated last year came from renewable sources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HALF OF IRELAND\u2019S grid-scale electricity generated in 2025 came from renewable sources.<\/p>\n<p>However, there was wide variation on a daily basis in the renewable generation share, largely due to differences in wind generation.<\/p>\n<p>The Central Statistics Office (CSO) today released figures on electricity supply by source in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The electricity supply in the figures refers to output from main activity producers, whose primary activity is the supply of electricity to the grid for sale to other parties.<\/p>\n<p>It does not include all supply from autoproducers who generate electricity primarily for their own use, such as generation from rooftop solar panels.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787624599_497_.png\"  alt=\"0297101_Climate_&amp;_Energy_Electricity_Supply_by_Source_2025_Infographic_ENG (1)\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            CSO infographic on electric supply in 2025                    CSO<\/p>\n<p>    CSO\n<\/p>\n<p>Gas\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0largest\u00a0energy source for electricity generation,\u00a0responsible for 47% of generation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wind\u00a0came in second and was the largest renewable source,\u00a0providing\u00a040% of generated electricity.<\/p>\n<p>There was a 3% increase in electricity generated from wind last year when compared to 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In winter, a higher share of electricity is generated from wind than in summer, due to typically higher mean wind speeds.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, February had the highest monthly share of electricity supply from wind at 49% of total supply, whilst May had the lowest at 22%.<\/p>\n<p>However, May had the highest amount of solar electricity generation in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>On a daily basis, the highest renewable generation share in 2025 was 86% on 23 February, the lowest was 11% on 20 January, again largely due to differences in wind generation.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, electricity generation from grid-scale solar farms was\u00a01,101 GWh\u00a0in 2025, a 51% increase compared\u00a0with\u00a02024.<\/p>\n<p>Gigawatt-hours (GWH) are often used as a measure of the output of large electricity power stations.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, grid-scale solar farms made up 4% of generated electricity in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>But while half of Ireland\u2019s grid-scale electricity generated last year can from renewable sources, this is still someways off the target of 80% renewable energy in electricity by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Electricity generation meanwhile from coal-fired power stations was 52% less last year when compared with 2024, and in June 2025, Ireland stopped all generation of electricity from coal.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, net imports of electricity accounted for 17% of total supply last year. In 2023, net imports of electricity were 3,275 GWh, which contributed 10% of total supply.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Net imports of electricity rose by 21% compared with 2024, and by 87% when compared with 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland\u2019s electricity grid supply grew by 3.5% to 35,884 GWh in 2025 when compared with 2024. The increase in supply largely came from increases in net imports of electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the peak monthly average supply time was from 5pm to 6pm in November 2025, with the lowest average monthly supply was between 4am and 5am in June 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"HALF OF IRELAND\u2019S grid-scale electricity generated in 2025 came from renewable sources.
