US president Donald Trump<\/a> threatened on Monday to increase tariffs<\/a> on all cars, trucks, car parts and steel from Canada<\/a> to 50 per cent starting on January 1st as the relationship with the United States\u2019 closest traditional ally morphs into a full-blown trade war.<\/p>\n

Writing on Truth Social, the president said Canada was \u201camong the worst Nations in the World to deal with\u201d and that it \u201cwill be treated like a State no longer\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey feel entitled, and yet, WE DON\u2019T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Later Monday, the president stepped up his insults against Canadian officials, saying the United States was key to Canada\u2019s survival.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone should get these clowns to \u2018fall in line\u2019 or, the consequences for Canada will be far WORSE!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Trade tensions between the United States and Canada have spiralled over the past few days, after the two sides failed to reach a trade deal and Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on $20 billion (\u20ac17 billion) of the country\u2019s exports Saturday.<\/p>\n

Trump had threatened those tariffs in a bid to speed trade talks and persuade Canada to remove some of the retaliatory measures it had taken against yet other tariffs Trump introduced last year. <\/p>\n

But despite weeks of negotiations \u2014 and frequent reassurances from Trump that a deal was close \u2014 the two sides announced late Friday that they had failed to come to terms.<\/p>\n

In Canada, Trump\u2019s actions provoked an immediate and defiant response. On Saturday, Mark Carney, the country\u2019s prime minister, said the long-time allies were \u201cat war\u201d over trade, and promised to respond in kind with tariffs targeting US agriculture, electronics, steel and other sectors. Canadian officials have said they would announce their retaliatory measures on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Carney told reporters Monday that he was not surprised by threats of further reprisals from Washington after his announcement that Canada would match Trump\u2019s tariffs \u201cdollar for dollar\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe learned from the US team during negotiations that he wants to destroy our major industries,\u201d Carney said in French. \u201cThat\u2019s one of the major reasons that led us to say \u2018no\u2019. It was a bad deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the Trump administration will have to revise its approach if talks are ever to restart.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe attitude, at the negotiation table, that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States, that Canadian industry is going to be disadvantaged relative to American industry, that we\u2019re going to set up terms so that over time Canadian industry is going face constant headwinds \u2014 that\u2019s not something we\u2019re going to accept,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n

Tariffs have already been devastating for the Canadian auto industry, a major source of cars, car parts and steel for US automakers. Companies including General Motors and Stellantis, the maker of Jeep and Chrysler cars, have cut back production in Canada or cancelled expansion plans.<\/p>\n

Some of the vehicles most popular with US buyers are made in Canada, including the Toyota RAV4, Chrysler Pacifica, Honda CR-V and Honda Civic.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s latest threats also create more uncertainty for automakers already buffeted by ever-changing trade policies. <\/p>\n

Trump officials have defended their decisions. But elsewhere in Washington, the new US tariffs drew significant opposition. Congressional Democrats attacked the Trump administration, and even some Republicans expressed alarm that the duties could cause domestic costs to rise.<\/p>\n

In Maine on Monday, vice-president JD Vance told a crowd of supporters that he was among those who thought the United States and Canada essentially had a deal before Canada came in \u201cwith a bunch of unreasonable last-minute demands\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that we should have a deal, but I think that we need to send a message loud and clear to the prime minister of Canada,\u201d Vance said. \u201cStop taking advantage of the people of Maine. Stop taking advantage of America.\u201d<\/p>\n

But senator Susan Collins of Maine, one of the more vulnerable Republican incumbents, on Saturday implored the president to reverse course on Canadian import taxes and \u201creach a fair agreement\u201d with the country bordering her state.<\/p>\n

\u201cEver since the tariffs were first announced, I have heard from many businesses, farmers and lobstermen concerned about the cost of navigating the tariffs, the lack of domestic supply chains and the likely imposition of retaliatory tariffs by Canada,\u201d Collins said.<\/p>\n

Canadian officials have attributed the breakdown to US negotiators, claiming that Washington had made last-minute demands that upended the talks. But Jamieson Greer, the US trade representative, has maintained that Canadian leaders were to blame.<\/p>\n

Shortly after talks faltered, Greer told The New York Times that the US offer had included cutting tariffs targeting steel, aluminium and automobiles, and eliminating entirely a tariff Trump put on lumber last year. Speaking on CNBC on Monday, he said Canadian officials had also been pressing US leaders to drop some tariffs on heavy-duty vehicles.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe progressed to a point Tuesday night where we had enough agreement among the parties to announce that we had found a way to a deal,\u201d Greer told CNBC. \u201cThen we set about to finalise it. And then in the last hours, I think, there were things that the Canadians just, you know, they wanted more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if it was political for them,\u201d Greer added. \u201cIt certainly doesn\u2019t make economic sense, but perhaps for political reasons, they have some byelections coming up, I don\u2019t know. But they came in and they wanted more. And we weren\u2019t prepared to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is not clear what legal authority Trump would use to manifest the tariffs he threatened on Monday. While the supreme court struck down some of Trump\u2019s global tariffs this year, he has used a variety of other laws to put tariffs on steel, cars and other industries.<\/p>\n

The 50 per cent tariff on $20 billion of Canadian exports that went into effect on Saturday relied on Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, an obscure statute that had never before been used to impose tariffs. Those tariffs could face legal challenges in the coming weeks, experts said.<\/p>\n
