TP-Link\u2019s smart home brand Tapo is taking aim at Ring with a new flagship 4K video doorbell. <\/p>\n
The Tapo Doorbell Pro D260 combines a 4K camera with a 180-degree field of view, giving it enough vertical coverage to capture visitors from head to toe while also keeping an eye on packages left at the doorstep. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s not cheap with a retail price north of \u00a3200, but that spec-sheet is a bump from Tapo\u2019s recent D210, which offered 2K resolution and a 160-degree viewing angle. <\/p>\n
The D260 can be installed wire-free using its built-in rechargeable battery, or can be hardwired if you want it permanently powered. <\/p>\n
TP-Link tells us that the battery life is up to 180 days depending on usage, and it also works with Tapo solar panels and power banks as alternative ways to keep it running. <\/p>\n
Hardwiring allows for 24\/7 continuous recording and pre-roll recording, so you get a more complete picture of what happened before an event was detected. <\/p>\n
And while the price tag is on a par with the likes of Ring\u2019s new Wired Video Doorbell 4K Pro, there are no additional fees for extras\u2026 which can\u2019t be said for the Amazon-owned brand.<\/p>\n
The subscription-free pitch isn\u2019t just about local storage either, as the D260 uses a combination of radar, PIR and on-device machine learning to detect people, animals, vehicles and packages, while its facial recognition can identify familiar faces without sending biometric data to the cloud. <\/p>\n
There’s also an Aerial View feature that shows the path a visitor took around your property, which could help distinguish someone actually approaching your door from somebody simply walking past. <\/p>\n
All of that comes without a mandatory monthly fee. <\/p>\n
In terms of local storage, the D260 has a microSD card slot, which supports cards up to 512GB. <\/p>\n
Tapo Care is still available if you want cloud storage, and includes extra features such as rich notifications, encrypted backups and a 30-day video history. <\/p>\n
The camera itself records in 4K at 15fps and has HDR, 3D noise reduction and lens distortion correction. <\/p>\n
At night, there’s both infrared and full-color night vision, backed by built-in spotlights and white lights. <\/p>\n
There is also two-way audio with noise cancellation, a 94dB siren and a voice-masking feature for doorbell calls. The latter lets you speak to visitors while disguising your voice, which is potentially useful when you’re dealing with someone you don’t know. <\/p>\n
The D260 is rated IP66 for outdoor use and supports Wi-Fi connectivity, and boasts Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings integrations<\/p>\n
TP-Link hasn\u2019t announced US pricing yet, with the company currently listing the doorbell as \u201ccoming soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, the confirmed UK launch pricing – \u00a3219.99 (currently available for an \u00a3159.99 \u201cearly bird\u201d price) – puts it firmly into premium video doorbell territory, although the lack of a required subscription could make the overall cost more attractive. <\/p>\n
Whether that makes the D260 a serious Ring alternative will come down to image quality, detection reliability and how well Tapo’s software works in everyday use.<\/p>\n
