The industry here now employs more than 61,000 people and includes 22 of the top 25 players internationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These include financial services giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/citigroup\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/citigroup\/\">Citigroup<\/a>, which employs more than 3,000 staff, mainly at its Dublin base which doubles as the bank\u2019s European headquarters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Northern Trust, one the world\u2019s largest fund administrators, employs 1,800 staff here, mainly in Limerick, while US banking giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jp-morgan-chase\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jp-morgan-chase\/\">JP Morgan<\/a> employs 1,500 people, mainly at its Dublin operation, which is also its European centre. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the launch on Tuesday of the Government\u2019s revamped strategy for the sector, Ministers noted that next year will mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Dublin\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ifsc\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ifsc\/\"> International Financial Services Centre<\/a>, where a large portion of the industry is domiciled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ministers like to play up the regional aspect of financial investment for political reasons, but 75 per cent is Dublin-based. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAlmost 40 years ago, Ireland made a bold choice. We chose to build something new. We chose to compete globally. And we chose to back ourselves,\u201d Minister for State with responsibility for financial services<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/robert-troy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/robert-troy\/\"> Robert Troy<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/08\/25\/new-government-strategy-aims-to-increase-financial-services-jobs-to-70000\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Government strategy aims to increase financial services jobs to 70,000Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The industry\u2019s employment footprint has almost doubled since 2015 on the back of some favourable headwinds including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brexit\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brexit\/\">Brexit, <\/a>which led to an influx of business here as London-based firms sought to stay inside EU financial passporting rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Much of the new business flowing in relates to digitalisation and cybersecurity rather than traditional financial services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Boston-headquartered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/state-street-global-advisors\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/state-street-global-advisors\/\">State Street<\/a> recently chose Kilkenny for the location of its new global cybersecurity hub.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787672657_592_1784803479672-9ae96ac7-c636-4bcb-998c-c0aedcc60931.jpeg\"\/>How many new homes does Ireland really need? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Government\u2019s new strategy, which aims to lift employment in financial services here to 70,000 by 2030, is difficult to weigh up as it talks in generalities about cutting red tape and boosting competitiveness, noble ambitions but hard to measure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-finance\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-finance\/\">Department of Finance<\/a> officials say they want to get away from simply measuring every strategy by job numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">To this end, they have set the latest plan against 36 key performance indicators, which include metrics around the level of assets under management here and exports in financial services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Insiders say \u201cturning the dial for the industry\u201d will, however, require modernising legislation to support the tokenisation of investment funds under the Irish Collective Asset Management Vehicles Act and other specific changes to the Companies Act. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One of the main criticisms from those in the sector, at least the one that has dominated recent public consultations, has been the Central Bank\u2019s authorisation process, which has been perceived as onerous and excessively procedural.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Insiders say the bank has taken the criticism on board and has made the process \u201cmore efficient\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Finance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\">Simon Harris<\/a> says progressing the European Union\u2019s proposed Capital Markets Union (CMU) project would be a focus of Ireland\u2019s EU presidency. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Concern has been raised that this could shift business away from Dublin and into bigger financial centres such as Paris or Frankfurt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But advocates say progress on CMU would enlarge the pie for all, including Ireland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Long seen as an offshoot of London\u2019s global financial centre, Ireland\u2019s financial sector has grown legs.
