It\u2019s also now widely available for sale, indicative of an internet culture that instantaneously commodifies any significant event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The origins of the shirt, which right-wing activist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/charlie-kirk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/charlie-kirk\/\">Charlie Kirk<\/a> (31) was wearing on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/09\/10\/right-wing-commentator-charlie-kirk-shot-at-event-in-utah\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/09\/10\/right-wing-commentator-charlie-kirk-shot-at-event-in-utah\/\">when he was killed<\/a>, are unknown. However, in the hours after the shooting, sellers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/etsy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/etsy\/\">Etsy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tiktok\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tiktok\/\">TikTok<\/a> and other print-on-demand sites flooded the marketplace with copies or similar designs, leading to criticism from prominent conservative voices, like the Libs of TikTok account, who see exploitation at work. An official version did not seem to appear on Kirk\u2019s personal site until Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The \u201cFreedom\u201d shirt quickly became a meme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s where cultural identity and cheap viral consumerism intersect,\u201d D Andrew Price, head of content at Memes Media Group, said of how Kirk\u2019s T-shirt has proliferated in recent days.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The official Freedom T-shirt. Photograph: The Charlie Kirk Store <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Susana Tosca, a scholar of internet culture at the University of Southern Denmark, said, \u201cOnline culture thrives on templates that can be endlessly remixed and combined in different ways, so ambiguity and openness are key to something actually being successful at spreading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The competition for profits means that when an event captures attention, creators have to kick into high gear. After an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2024\/07\/14\/in-pictures-donald-trump-targeted-by-assassination-attempt-at-pennsylvania-rally\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2024\/07\/14\/in-pictures-donald-trump-targeted-by-assassination-attempt-at-pennsylvania-rally\/\">assassination attempt on Donald Trump<\/a> during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania last year, online retailers brimmed with shirts and mugs bearing the image of the bloodied, defiant presidential candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some of Kirk\u2019s detractors on the political left have used the T-shirt to discredit his conservative worldview, saying it defined freedom far too narrowly. One shop was criticised for selling shirts that mocked Kirk\u2019s killing; by Friday morning, those items appeared to have been removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Many of the \u201cFreedom\u201d shirts appear hastily designed. A site called Tees Local claimed to be selling Kirk\u2019s \u201cofficial\u201d shirt, but that claim was undermined by a representative from the firm, who wrote in an email, \u201cOnly a few hours after his passing, our design team came together and decided to create a special collection to honour him.\u201d The message included a time stamp in Vietnamese; many manufacturers of fast and instant fashion are based in Southeast Asia and China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A representative for Tees Local said that the shirt \u201chas been selling very well\u201d, though the company did not provide specific details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/09\/14\/charlie-kirk-shooting-suspect-not-co-operating-with-authorities-utah-governor-says\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie Kirk shooting suspect not co-operating with authorities, Utah governor saysOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf you want to support a company, support Erika Kirk\u2019s clothing company,\u201d the Orthodox Jewish gun-ownership influencer Yehuda Remer wrote in a social media post, referring to Kirk\u2019s wife, who runs a Christian-themed clothing line. Remer said he would not sell the \u201cFreedom\u201d shirt in his merchandise shop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jessica Peters, the Indiana-based co-owner of Life\u2019s a Stitch, a store that sells clothing, wrestled with the same challenge. Ultimately, so many customers wanted \u201cFreedom\u201d shirts that she heeded their requests \u2013 she is charging $12 (\u20ac10) for a T-shirt and $25 for a hooded sweatshirt. Peters intends to donate any profits the Freedom-themed gear makes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have decided to not charge a normal price in hopes that people will order more of these to also not be afraid to stand up for what you believe in, just like Charlie did,\u201d her site says. Life\u2019s a Stitch slightly amended the design, adding a Bible verse to the front and an American flag to the sleeve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Natalie Danelishen, an administrative assistant who lives in Ohio, was relieved when Kirk\u2019s site finally began selling the \u201cFreedom\u201d shirt on Friday. The proliferation of sellers looking to cash in on a tragedy was \u201cgross and distasteful\u201d, Danelishen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI wanted to wait until I could directly contribute to Charlie\u2019s family and organisation,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As supporters less patient than Danelishen initially rushed to pay tribute to Kirk, some erroneously thought the T-shirt had been produced by the merchandising arm of Turning Point USA, the campus activist group Kirk cofounded, but that does not appear to be the case. After the killing, Turning Point started selling a T-shirt that shows a line drawing of Kirk dressed in a suit and one fist raised in the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/09\/15\/adriana-casserly-ive-added-charlie-kirks-death-to-the-long-list-of-reasons-why-i-wont-return-to-live-in-the-usa\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie Kirk\u2019s death reminds me why I left a dream job in the US for rural IrelandOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The shirt\u2019s legend is a biblical quote attributed to the Old Testament prophet Isaiah: \u201cHere I am Lord, send me.\u201d (Turning Point has its own online store, separate from Kirk\u2019s personal site, and does not sell the \u201cFreedom\u201d shirt.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An apparent imitation of the Turning Point T-shirt quickly appeared on iFrogTees, a print-on-demand shop, where it was billed \u201ca profound tribute to a life dedicated to faith, freedom, and the American spirit\u201d.
