\n\tGary Oldman<\/a> has argued that one of the secrets of the success of Slow Horses<\/a> is that audiences don\u2019t have to wait for years between seasons.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmid growing viewer discontent over interregnums between seasons, Oldman said the Slow Horses team works hard to \u201ckeep the momentum of the show going.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen the next season of the Mick Herron spy drama premieres on Apple TV<\/a> in September, the company will have streamed six seasons in the space of four years. The regularity contrasts with other shows, such as Apple\u2019s Severance, which had a three-year gap between Seasons 1 and 2.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou invest in these people, these fictional people, and then the show ends, and you\u2019ve got to wait two and a half years,\u201d Oldman said incredulously. He added that it is a \u201cstruggle and a fight\u201d to persuade people to keep returning every year, and \u201ckeep on top of the quality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOldman was speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival<\/a>, where he was handed the Global Icon Award. He said the prize was \u201cflattering and frankly alarming,\u201d when he was told the news by festival chair Fatima Salaria.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring an on-stage interview with Edith Bowman, Oldman said Jackson Lamb was a role that \u201cfell from the sky\u201d at the right time in his life. \u201cHe has no filter, he is direct, he can\u2019t be arsed with the social norms. That\u2019s the fun of playing him,\u201d the Harry Potter star continued. <\/p>\n

\n\tOldman reflected on his near-50-year career, telling an audience of television executives that he always hopes \u201cthe best work is next year\u201d and he is \u201cdeeply self-critical,\u201d despite winning an Oscar for his work in Darkest Hour.<\/p>\n

\n\tOldman said he starts every job with a \u201clow frequency of anxiety,\u201d except for Slow Horses over the past six years, because he has known that the \u201calchemy, the chemistry is working\u201d on the Apple TV series. \u201cYou get butterflies in the belly, and with skill and experience, you get them to fly in formation,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\n\tOldman said it is the small details that help him find his way into a character. For Drexl Spivey in True Romance, it was hearing a young person on a street in Brooklyn. For Lamb, it was alighting on a costume that could create a \u201csomewhat iconic\u201d physical silhouette.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe joked that his wife admonishes him for people watching. The actor revealed that he recently \u201csneaked a picture\u201d of a man at a train station who captured his imagination. \u201cHe will go into my file,\u201d Oldman quipped, provoking laughter in the room.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen receiving the award, Oldman was played video messages of congratulations from Manchester United icons including former manager Alex Ferguson.
