But amid all the noise, Godso has maintained a very different mindset when it comes to training.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018To me, a quieter, more intuitive approach is really at the heart of how I train my clients and myself,\u2019 she tells Women\u2019s Health. \u2018In an industry that always has a new training trend and a lot of outside noise, I always focus on putting the personal in personal training. The campaign centres on the idea that movement is something to feel rather than something to prove.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">These days, the 37-year-old trainer also listens to her body far more than she did in her 20s, paying attention to what feels good and what doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018For me, <a data-start=\"1432\" data-end=\"1531\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a71781877\/strength-training-heart-health-study\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a71781877\/strength-training-heart-health-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training\" data-node-id=\"27.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength training<\/a> is authentic to me. It\u2019s what feels nurturing, fun, challenging and supportive to my body,\u2019 she says, adding that she always asks her clients what kind of movement they enjoy and makes sure it\u2019s built into their weekly routines.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018You likely won\u2019t love every workout in your schedule if you\u2019re following a proper training plan, but having those workouts that feel really in line with your needs and authenticity will get you through the hard stuff, too.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">While her training approach may be intuitive, it\u2019s also highly <a data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2140\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a39559293\/functional-training\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a39559293\/functional-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"functional\" data-node-id=\"36.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">functional<\/a> \u2013 with a focus on stability, mobility and overall strength.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"40\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Here, Godso shares five go-to strength exercises that all of her celebrity clients do \u2013 and love.<\/p>\n<p>5 full-body strength moves Kirsty Godso swears by1. Hip thrusts<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"47\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">(Demonstrated in the second video clip above)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"51\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018I absolutely love <a data-start=\"2560\" data-end=\"2645\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a28759701\/hip-thrust\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a28759701\/hip-thrust\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hip thrusts\" data-node-id=\"51.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hip thrusts<\/a> in many versions. They\u2019re an amazing exercise when done properly and are an essential glute strength movement.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"55\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018I use a lot of different variations such as barbell hip thrusts, single-leg hip thrusts, single-leg elevated hip thrusts, dual-leg elevated hip thrusts. It\u2019s a movement I coach and personally do multiple times a week so I like to mix up the variations to keep hitting the glutes a little differently.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"59\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"59.0\">How to do it:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"60\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"60.0\">Sit with your feet flat on the floor and your upper back resting against a workout bench. Hold a barbell or weight across your hip creases. Position your feet so your knees are stacked over your ankles at the top of the movement.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"60.1\">Drive through your heels and squeeze your glutes to extend your hips until your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"60.2\">Lower your hips back down with control. That\u2019s one rep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"64\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"64.0\">Godso&#8217;s tip:<\/strong> Have a mirror next to you so you can check your positioning. \u2018If the foot is too far out you\u2019ll feel more hamstrings, and if the foot is too close, you\u2019ll feel more quads. Make small adjustments to find a position you can hold at lockout at the top without rib flare or arching through your lower back, then add the weight once the feet are set.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>2. Cable face pulls<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"70\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">(Demonstrated in the fourth video clip above)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"74\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018This exercise is all about that sexy, <a data-start=\"4114\" data-end=\"4210\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/g36813268\/best-back-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/g36813268\/best-back-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strong upper back\" data-node-id=\"74.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strong upper back<\/a> and helps work on your posture. I do this exercise at least twice a week and swear by it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"78\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"78.0\">How to do it:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"79\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"79.0\">Set the cable to around shoulder height and attach a rope.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"79.1\">Stand in a staggered stance with a slight bend in your knees and your back heel raised. Hold one end of the rope in each hand.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"79.2\">Pull the rope towards your face, allowing your elbows to flare out at around shoulder height.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"79.3\">Pause briefly, then return to the starting position with control. That\u2019s one rep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"83\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"83.0\">Godso&#8217;s tip:<\/strong> Slow it down. \u2018When you squeeze at the max range of the pull position, try holding it for one to two seconds before controlling the rope back in. When you go slower you\u2019ll also feel more core engagement.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>3. Deadlifts<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"89\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">(Demonstrated in the first video clip above)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"93\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018I think deadlifts are an essential exercise not only as a <a data-start=\"5162\" data-end=\"5228\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a71458346\/hilary-duff-ladder-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a71458346\/hilary-duff-ladder-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lower-body\" data-node-id=\"93.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lower-body<\/a> exercise but for how well they light up your entire posterior chain. They\u2019re amazing for the glutes and hamstrings but also require a lot of core strength.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"97\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018I predominantly use kettlebell deadlifts with my clients and will alternate between <a data-start=\"5471\" data-end=\"5580\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a702092\/how-to-do-a-dumbbell-romanian-deadlift\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a702092\/how-to-do-a-dumbbell-romanian-deadlift\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Romanian deadlifts (RDLs)\" data-node-id=\"97.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Romanian deadlifts (RDLs)<\/a> and split-stance deadlifts with one or two weights. I love to incorporate single-leg exercises in my workouts to improve stability.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"101\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"101.0\">How to do it:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"102\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"102.0\">Stand with your feet around shoulder-width apart, with a barbell, kettlebell or pair of dumbbells positioned in front of you.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"102.1\">Push your hips back and soften your knees as you hinge forwards, keeping your spine neutral and the weight close to your body.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"102.2\">Drive through your feet and squeeze your glutes to extend your hips and return to standing.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"102.3\">Pause briefly at the top, then hinge at your hips to lower the weight with control. That\u2019s one rep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"106\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"106.0\">Godso&#8217;s tip:<\/strong> \u2018If you struggle with the hinge in a deadlift, try attaching a thick resistance band to a pole, stepping into it and securing it around your hips, then step away far enough until you feel some tension on it. The band will help guide your hips back into the hinge position and will also give you more glute work when you have to push back up against it to come to the top of the move.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>4. Cable triceps extensions<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"112\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018My clients and I are absolutely obsessed with these! I love to use them as a burnout exercise at the end of a circuit and do high reps using a moderate weight so you can control it. Trust me, it burns.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"116\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"116.0\">How to do it:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"117\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"117.0\">Stand facing the cable machine with your feet around hip-width apart. Hold the attachment with both hands and keep your elbows tucked close to your sides.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"117.1\">Keeping your elbows still, extend your arms until they are straight, squeezing your triceps at the bottom.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"117.2\">Slowly bend your elbows to return the attachment to the starting position with control. That\u2019s one rep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"121\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"121.0\">Godso&#8217;s tip:<\/strong> \u2018The key to getting the most out of this for your triceps is to keep your elbows tight to your rib cage the entire time, maintain a slight hinge forward in your torso so you\u2019re not standing completely upright and pull your shoulders away from your ears so you\u2019re not trying to work from your traps and shoulders.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>5. High-plank single-arm row<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"127\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">(Demonstrated in the final video clip above)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"131\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018This is the one my clients love to hate and vice versa! It\u2019s an upper-body exercise that works your entire body and your core like crazy.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"135\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Godso recommends two variations.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"139\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"139.0\">Option 1: dumbbell row<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"140\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"140.0\">Get into a high-plank position with your feet wide to help stabilise your hips.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"140.1\">Elevate one hand on a bench or yoga block, keeping it underneath your shoulder, and hold a dumbbell in your opposite hand.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"140.2\">Row the weight towards your ribs without allowing your hips to rotate or losing your flat-back position.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"140.3\">Lower the weight with control and repeat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"144\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"144.0\">Option 2: cable row<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"145\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"145.0\">If you&#8217;re more advanced, set up in a high-plank position with your feet wide.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"145.1\">Hold a handle attached to a cable set at its lowest position.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"145.2\">Perform a single-arm row while keeping your hips and torso as still as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"149\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"149.0\">Godso&#8217;s tip:<\/strong> \u2018Both of these exercises require a huge amount of stability, making a lighter weight feel more difficult. Start light and build your confidence, focusing on form first.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Kirsty Godso&#8217;s training non-negotiables<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"154\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">When it comes to intuitive training, there are a few principles Godso encourages all of her clients to follow.<\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"157\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"157.0\">\u2018I prefer that women don\u2019t train <a data-start=\"9078\" data-end=\"9174\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/weight-loss\/a71916276\/intermittent-fasting-vs-calorie-counting\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/weight-loss\/a71916276\/intermittent-fasting-vs-calorie-counting\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"fasted\" data-node-id=\"157.0.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fasted<\/a>, even if they have something small before their morning workout so they have more energy and some fuel to burn! My go-to is some protein powder in my morning coffee or matcha.\u2019<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"157.1\">\u2018I love to add 15 to 20 minutes of walking or StairMaster at the end of my strength workouts when I have time. Some studies show this can help both speed up recovery and burn fat but honestly, I mostly do it because it feels good!\u2019<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"157.2\">\u2018Take time to prep your body for your strength workouts through <a data-start=\"9652\" data-end=\"9740\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a36001630\/foam-roller-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a36001630\/foam-roller-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"foam rolling\" data-node-id=\"157.2.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">foam rolling<\/a> and activation. A lot of people skip this but it\u2019s really important for mobility, better recovery and better activation and connection in your workouts. It doesn\u2019t have to be long, just five to 10 minutes at the start of your workout.\u2019<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"157.3\">\u2018I prefer a focus on step count across the day versus trying to get 10K steps in one go.
