That threat was met with a similar one from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who said Canada would match the US&#8217; tariffs &#8220;dollar-for-dollar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those trade tensions have had a negative ripple effect on US states that depend on Canadian tourism and visitor spending.<\/p>\n<p>Canadians pulled back on leisure travel to the US in 2025, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/36-28-0001\/2026007\/article\/00005-eng.htm\" data-track-click=\"{&quot;click_type&quot;:&quot;other&quot;,&quot;element_name&quot;:&quot;body_link&quot;,&quot;event&quot;:&quot;outbound_click&quot;}\" rel=\" nofollow noopener\">Statistics Canada data.<\/a> Visitor numbers rebounded over the past year but remain below 2024 levels.<\/p>\n<p>To determine which places could be most affected by the drop in visitors, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordeconomics.com\/resource\/us-states-feel-the-heat-of-inbound-travel-declines\/\" data-track-click=\"{&quot;click_type&quot;:&quot;other&quot;,&quot;element_name&quot;:&quot;body_link&quot;,&quot;event&quot;:&quot;outbound_click&quot;}\" rel=\" nofollow noopener\">Tourism Economics<\/a> estimated the decline in Canadian visitor spending in each state in 2025 compared with 2024, then divided that projected loss by the state&#8217;s resident population, using Census Bureau population data. <\/p>\n<p>The figures show the projected loss in Canadian visitor spending per state resident. The 15 places with losses above the $11 national average indicated &#8220;strong dependence on Canadian travel,&#8221; Tourism Economics wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis was published in September 2025 and therefore includes 2025 forecasts rather than actual spending figures.<\/p>\n<p>Tourism Economics identified the following 15 places \u2014 14 states and Washington, DC \u2014 as more dependent on Canadian travelers and therefore more likely to experience losses greater than average.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the 15 places, ranked from least to most affected.<\/p>\n<p>                                15. That&#8217;s just above the expected national average loss of $11 per US citizen.<\/p>\n<p>                                14.
