A Cork man travelling to a stag do in Las Vegas has been fined after admitting to verbally abusing staff while \u201cclearly drunk\u201d on a flight after being told not to use the toilet.<\/p>\n
Emmet Moynihan, 31, with an address on South Douglas Road, \u201csmelled of alcohol\u201d when he boarded a British Airways flight from Heathrow to the US city on August 6.<\/p>\n
After being told the flight was delayed, the Co Cork man tried to use the toilet and called it a \u201cfucking joke\u201d and \u201cverbally abused staff\u201d when he was asked to sit down, the court heard.<\/p>\n
Mr Moynihan flew in from Cork, for his appearance at Uxbridge Magistrates Court on Wednesday wearing a grey Levi\u2019s hoodie.<\/p>\n
He was fined \u00a32,224 (\u20ac2,600) after pleading guilty to entering an aircraft when drunk and failing to obey the lawful commands of a pilot.<\/p>\n
Videos of the incident were circulated online and accrued more than six million views, Mr Moynihan\u2019s lawyer Paul Turnbull said.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Abigail Day told the court \u201ca passenger had also noticed that he smelled of alcohol and was clearly drunk\u201d during the altercation with the flight crew.<\/p>\n
Ms Day said: \u201cPassengers then began filming him with their telephone and he was lunging towards passengers\u2019 phones saying \u2018stop fucking recording me\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
She said the co-pilot eventually got involved in trying to get Mr Moynihan to sit down.<\/p>\n
Mr Turnbull said his client had \u201cgot past everyone\u201d in his intoxicated state, and was only up and about from his seat because \u201che wanted to use the toilet\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cThe defendant was part of a group going to Las Vegas for a stag, there was an element of consumption in Cork and they had access to a lounge at Heathrow.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr Moynihan admitted both counts and was ordered to pay a \u00a32,224 (\u20ac2,600) fine, an \u00a3890 (\u20ac1,040) surcharge and \u00a385 (\u20ac100) in costs.<\/p>\n
In sentencing, Magistrate Sandra Joseph said: \u201cThere is only one reason we were not going to send it to the crown court, and that is that the plane was still on the ground and therefore passengers could have been evacuated.<\/p>\n
