{"id":65920,"date":"2025-09-15T17:40:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T17:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/65920\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T17:40:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T17:40:11","slug":"what-is-the-worlds-deadliest-animal-60-types-of-it-in-mississippi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/65920\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the world&#8217;s deadliest animal? 60+ types of it in Mississippi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/74973441007-mosquito-season.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Diseases spread by mosquito bites and how you can protect yourself<\/p>\n<p>Here are four diseases transmitted from a mosquito bite to humans that people can avoid by repelling the insects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarionledger.com\/story\/news\/2025\/09\/08\/us-wants-you-to-hunt-fish-help-stop-invasive-species-eat-giant-swamp-rat-wild-hogs-carp-snakehead\/86043217007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mississippi <\/a>is home to venomous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarionledger.com\/story\/news\/2025\/07\/12\/snake-filled-lakes-in-mississippi-world-atlas-says\/84608216007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">snakes<\/a>, deadly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarionledger.com\/story\/news\/2025\/05\/01\/dangerous-spiders-in-mississippi-know-where-they-live-what-to-look-for-black-widow-brown-recluse\/83367312007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">spiders <\/a>and giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarionledger.com\/story\/news\/2025\/09\/04\/world-atlas-lists-the-most-alligator-filled-lakes-rivers-in-mississippi\/85954527007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">alligators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s another pest in the state that&#8217;s considered the most deadly animal in the world, despite its small size.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know to stay safe, protect your home.<\/p>\n<p>What is the world&#8217;s deadliest animal?<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the CDC released an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/global-health\/impact\/fighting-the-worlds-deadliest-animal.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> calling the mosquito &#8220;the world&#8217;s deadliest animal.&#8221; Researchers said it&#8217;s responsible for killing more people than any other creature in the world through a variety of diseases.<\/p>\n<p>What diseases do mosquitoes carry?<\/p>\n<p>Mosquitoes are known to carry:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Malaria<\/li>\n<li>West Nile<\/li>\n<li>Lymphatic filariasis<\/li>\n<li>Encephalitis (Eastern Equine, LaCrosse and St. Louis)<\/li>\n<li>Dengue<\/li>\n<li>Chikungunya<\/li>\n<li>Zika<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each disease has its own symptoms and severity, but more than one of these could be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>How many people do mosquitoes kill?<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/vector-borne-diseases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">WHO<\/a>, vector-borne diseases (those transmitted from animals like mosquitoes) lead to more than 700,000 deaths per year.<\/p>\n<p>How many mosquitoes are in Mississippi?<\/p>\n<p>There are 60 species of mosquitoes in Mississippi, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/publications\/mosquitoes-west-nile-and-other-encephalitis-viruses-what-you-can-do-protect-yourself#:~:text=P2530-,Mosquitoes%2C%20West%20Nile%2C%20and%20Other%20Encephalitis%20Viruses:%20What%20You,range%20or%20unusual%20ecological%20niche.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mississippi State University Extension Office.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the <a href=\"https:\/\/msdh.ms.gov\/page\/14,1097,93.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mississippi State Department of Health<\/a> says only three or four kinds transmit diseases to people.<\/p>\n<p>How many people in Mississippi were infected by mosquitoes?<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/msdh.ms.gov\/page\/31,0,93.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">MDH<\/a>, from 2020 through a Sept. 11, 2025 report, mosquitos have caused 141 West Nile infections in the state. There have been 14 mosquito-borne infections that are not West Nile, Chikungunya or Zika; that list does include all three kinds of Encephalitis.<\/p>\n<p>Those totals include 10 deaths from mosquito-borne illnesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Can you catch Chagas in Mississippi? <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarionledger.com\/story\/news\/2025\/09\/10\/can-you-get-chagas-in-mississippi-what-are-kissing-bug-disease-symptoms-cdc\/86074597007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What to know as CDC warns of &#8216;kissing bug&#8217; disease spread<\/a><\/p>\n<p>How to keep mosquitoes away from your house<\/p>\n<p>Mosquitoes love standing water, so address anything that may collect water such as cups, tarps, open garbage cans, etc. Change water in birdbaths regularly. Old tires are particularly common larval habitats. Make sure any drainage ditches are free of overgrown grass or any other obstructions preventing the flow of water.<\/p>\n<p>The MSU Extension service also recommends thick, long-sleeved shirts and long pants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The less exposed skin, the less opportunity for mosquitoes to bite,&#8221; MSU wrote.<\/p>\n<p>What are the best mosquito repellents to use?<\/p>\n<p>According to the CDC,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/mosquito-borne-diseases\/_documents\/fl-resident-guide-to-mosquito-control-ifas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">repellents<\/a>\u00a0with the following active ingredients typically provide reasonably long-lasting protection:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DEET<\/li>\n<li>Picaridin<\/li>\n<li>Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus or PMD: &#8220;Products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus specifies that they should not to be used on children under the age of 3.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>IR3535<\/li>\n<li>2-undecanone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can some plants repel mosquitoes?<\/p>\n<p>While some residents have been told to plant marigolds, catnip, and other plants in their yard to repel mosquitoes, this doesn&#8217;t seem to be a full-proof plan. In a story by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/home-garden\/pest-control\/can-garden-plants-really-repel-mosquitoes-a3442994072\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Consumer Reports<\/a>, multiple entomologists acknowledged that plants like these may have chemical compounds that deter insects, but it won&#8217;t be enough to make any real impact.<\/p>\n<p>Joel Coats from Iowa State University clarified that the compounds prevent insects from feeding on them, but those chemicals aren&#8217;t released into the air.
