It has become one of the most scrutinized tools in modern filmmaking, capable of putting a 70-year-old actor\u2019s face on a 30-year-old body, frame by frame, decades after they actually looked that way. When it\u2019s done well, viewers either don\u2019t notice or they celebrate it. When it isn\u2019t, it tends to feel wrong in one very specific, unsettling way. So, what actually goes into digitally aging or de-aging someone on screen, and why do some results fall into the uncanny trap?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ve probably seen this Instagram meme that\u2019s been making the rounds lately:<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"876\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/digital_deaging-insta_meme_tom_cruise-900x876.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-436959\"  \/>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DcJtVGeStiK\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Instagram<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no real evidence yet as to whether Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019s new work \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt31450459\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Digger<\/a>\u201d does portray a 65-year-old character. There is no certainty that this exaggerated look on Tom Cruise isn\u2019t part of the film\u2019s comedic aesthetic. Yet what I like about this meme is the word \u201cmake-up.\u201d Prosthetics, not pixels. Before we get to the digital side of this story, it\u2019s worth remembering that aging an actor used to be an entirely physical, hands-on craft. Let\u2019s start there, shall we?<\/p>\n<p><strong>How filmmakers used to age and de-age<\/strong> actors<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long before anyone had a dedicated VFX department, aging an actor was a job for the make-up chair. For decades, the gold standard was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/movie-makeup-master-dick-smith-1922-2014\/29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dick Smith\u2019s work<\/a> on Dustin Hoffman in Arthur Penn\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/de\/title\/tt0065988\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_Little%20Big%20Man\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Little Big Man<\/a>\u201d from 1970. In it, a 33-year-old Hoffman spent hours a day under latex prosthetics to play his character Jack Crabb at 121 years old, as he narrated the story from a nursing home bed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is a short excerpt of how this amazing result came together:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"823\" data-id=\"436965\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/digital_deaging-still_hoffman.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-436965\"  \/>A still from \u201cLittle Big Man\u201d by Arthur Penn, 1970<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1378\" data-id=\"436962\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/digital_deaging-practical_de-aging_process.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-436962\"  \/>Source: a short film about the director Arthur Penn linked above<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a genuinely convincing transformation, isn\u2019t it? But why does it work so well? My answer is: because it is all physical, tangible, and crafted to look \u201creal\u201d in-camera. Thus, it also feels authentic, both for the actor and for us. Imagine wearing all those layers of latex and paint on your face for hours. They inevitably affect the way you talk and move, because you can physically feel the \u201cage.\u201d Performance is a crucial element in selling the transformation, and we will touch on it later in a bit more detail. Here, no doubt, Dustin Hoffman did a super convincing acting job!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital Domain\u2019s quiet breakthrough<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now I don\u2019t say that \u201cpractical\u201d aging and de-aging have died out. No, and the meme with Tom Cruise speaks for itself. (By the way, if you are interested in the modern world of prosthetics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cined.com\/practical-effects-in-film-the-craft-of-prosthetics-then-and-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">head over here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, over the past two decades, technology has advanced. With it have come new ways of doing the old craft. One of the first and most impressive examples of digital aging is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/de\/title\/tt0421715\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_The%20Curious%20Case%20of%20Benjamin%20Button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Curious Case of Benjamin Button<\/a>.\u201d According to the film\u2019s plot, Brad Pitt\u2019s character ages in reverse, from an old man into a young one. For the sequences featuring the elderly Benjamin, VFX studio Digital Domain <a href=\"https:\/\/digitaldomain.com\/work\/the-curious-case-of-benjamin-button\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">built fully CG heads<\/a> driven by Pitt\u2019s own facial performance, and composited them onto the bodies of three different performance doubles for more than 325 shots, totaling about 52 minutes of screen time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1021\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/digital_deaging-benjamin_button.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-436947\"  \/>A film still from \u201cThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button\u201d by David Fincher, 2008<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VFX company experts won the film an Academy Award for visual effects, and deservedly so. At the time, nobody had carried a photorealistic digital face convincingly through that much screen time. (There were films before \u201cBenjamin Button\u201d that played with digital de-aging, but only for a few flashback moments.) See for yourself:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a sense, this film is a technological ancestor of every digital de-aging or aging effect since then. At least they revolve around the core idea that Digital Domain implemented: track a real performance, then build or borrow a digital face to put on top of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tarkin\u2019s uncanny comeback<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not only for aging or de-aging actors. One of the Star Wars movies, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/de\/title\/tt3748528\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_Rogue%20One\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Rogue One<\/a>\u201d (2016), used a similar approach for something stranger. The creators built a CG head for an actor who\u2019d been dead for over twenty years. English actor Guy Henry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/rogue-one-how-grand-moff-tarkin-peter-cushing-returned-957258\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">performed<\/a> Grand Moff Tarkin on set, in costume, and ILM then replaced his face, shot by shot, with a digitally rebuilt version of Peter Cushing\u2019s. To ensure an accurate likeness, the studio used footage from his performances in the original \u201cStar Wars\u201d trilogy. Let\u2019s rewatch the actor\u2019s digital resurrection together:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How does this clip make you feel? Something is completely off, isn\u2019t it? A stiffness around Tarkin\u2019s eyes; the skin that behaves like a mask, an off-beat between his expressions and his words\u2026 I can\u2019t quite put my finger on what is wrong here, but Tarkin looks more like a character from an older visual game than an actual human. Remarkably, even when the film came out (2016), and even if viewers didn\u2019t know the original actor had died in 1994, they shared the same creepy feeling. And this feeling has a name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The uncanny valley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, it is called the \u201cuncanny valley.\u201d The term comes from Masahiro Mori, a Japanese robotics professor who <a href=\"https:\/\/web.ics.purdue.edu\/~drkelly\/MoriTheUncannyValley1970.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">proposed the idea<\/a> in 1970. Initially, it wasn\u2019t about movies or visual effects at all. Mori\u2019s theory describes a fascinating psychological phenomenon. We can describe it like this: the more human something looks, the more we generally like it. However, this remains true only until something looks almost perfectly human, but not quite.  At that point, our affection doesn\u2019t plateau; it drops off a cliff. That exact dip is what\u2019s called the uncanny valley, and Mori illustrated it with things like prosthetic hands and humanoid robots. They are close enough to human to invite real scrutiny, and just far enough off to fail it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/digital_deaging-uncanny_valley_scheme.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-436971\"  \/>The uncanny valley graph. Source: the original essay by Masahiro Mori, IEEE Robotics &amp; Automation Magazine<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody fully agrees on why our brains react this way, but one common theory is that a near-perfect human likeness triggers a kind of threat-detection instinct. The same one that might have helped us notice illness, or something dead, in a person who otherwise looks fine. A humanoid robot with an expressive silicone face is often the fastest way to feel this for yourself (hello Sophia!)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ouch, creepy! Back to our topic: Digital aging and de-aging land in the uncanny valley more often than filmmakers would like. One reason is that a digitally reconstructed face, however carefully modeled, is competing against a lifetime of human perception. We spend our whole lives watching and interpreting real faces, so we\u2019re remarkably sensitive to small errors in movement, expression, texture, and timing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Irishman\u2019s expensive lesson in de-aging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A further curious example of digital de-aging is Netflix\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/de\/title\/tt1302006\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_7_nm_1_in_0_q_The%20Irishman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Irishman<\/a>\u201d from 2019. It is interesting from various standpoints. First, it was the moment technology was tested at feature length, across three lead actors (de-aged to represent different periods in their lives), and for nearly three and a half hours.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/digital_deaging-the_irishman_still.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-436968\"  \/>A film still from \u201cThe Irishman\u201d by Martin Scorsese, 2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, ILM (another leading VFX company) approached the task differently than in the case with Tarkin, which we discussed above. The creators built a custom rig: a camera array mounted beside the main camera, using infrared light to capture facial detail. That way, they didn\u2019t need to put tracking helmets or markers on actors\u2019 faces. They also didn\u2019t need to interfere with the lighting setup or the director\u2019s choices. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci could perform without additional equipment on their faces, while the system used the captured data to drive their digital models frame by frame. Source: FX Guide<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results, however, split audiences. First, it was expensive technology, raising the question of whether it was worth it (compared to a traditional way of \u201crecasting\u201d younger actors for different ages). The bigger complaint, though, had nothing to do with money. Lots of critics pointed out that de-aged faces didn\u2019t fit on top of 76-year-old bodies. Because the actors still moved like men in their 70s, a digitally \u201cyoung\u201d De Niro could look unconvincing in physically demanding scenes, such as a fistfight. (Which is a problem that we already touched on in the beginning: if the acting doesn\u2019t help sell the illusion, the overall effect is bound to feel false and artificial.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now, to the most unexpected twist. Not long after the film came out, one visual effects artist decided to try it himself, alone, on a home computer. Working under the name \u201cShamook\u201d, he posted his own De Niro redo using simple-enough deepfake software. The result? Gone wild! At the time, various sources <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/irishman-robert-de-niro-deepfake-aging-fan-edit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a> this experiment as more convincing than the studio\u2019s own multi-million-dollar version. I\u2019ll let you draw your own conclusions. Here is the artist\u2019s side-by-side comparison: <\/p>\n<p><strong>Deepfake \u2013 a proper modern solution for digital de-aging?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story doesn\u2019t stop there. A year later, the season 2 finale of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/disneyplus.com\/browse\/entity-422f6dcc-226f-44e7-98d4-22de69b31cf3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Mandalorian<\/a>\u201d brought back a young Luke Skywalker to save the day, again with the help of ILM. The VFX house used a combination of a body double, archival footage of Mark Hamill, and a CG face. The result fell into much the same uncanny valley as Tarkin had years earlier. This time, though, audiences already knew what the older Hamill looked like, making the digital recreation especially apparent \u2013 even though Luke\u2019s CG face appears for only a few seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weeks later, the very same Shamook posted his own version, which again turned out to be uncomfortably better than the studio\u2019s work:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"907\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/digital_deaging-comparison_luke_skywalker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-436950\"  \/>Comparison from the video. Source: Shamook\u2019s YouTube channel<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily, this time, ILM and Lucasfilm didn\u2019t just take the hint; they <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/lucasfilm-hires-youtuber-after-his-deepfake-of-luke-sky-1847370089\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">hired the artist<\/a>. How cool is that! And it worked! When Luke reappeared a year later in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.disneyplus.com\/de-at\/browse\/entity-3749c03e-8204-46c5-b102-0410e6d51758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Book of Boba Fett<\/a>\u201c, ILM built the shot around a deepfake stage from the start, testing footage across different lighting setups with Shamook\u2019s guidance. I don\u2019t know about you, but I remember watching the scene with Grogu and thinking to myself: \u201cWow, that feels so much better now!\u201d Lots of fans and critics <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/book-boba-fett-luke-skywalker-cgi-hamill-improved-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">agreed<\/a> that it was a real improvement over the Mandalorian version, even if it still wasn\u2019t quite perfect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So where does that leave us?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What conclusions can we draw so far? We seem to be very good at recognizing what feels physically real, which is one reason Dick Smith\u2019s foam-latex work has aged so well. At the other extreme, a face built largely in CG without being closely grounded in a real human performance is much more likely to fall into the uncanny valley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, whenever we age or de-age someone digitally, we\u2019re actually asking the audience to believe a lie they\u2019re evolutionarily wired to catch. It becomes especially unnerving because of the rapid development of general AI image and video tools. Take a look at filmmaker Drew Geraci\u2019s recent tests in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mzed.com\/courses\/ai-video-for-filmmakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">MZed course \u201cDirecting the Future: Ethical AI Video for Filmmakers.\u201d<\/a> Too realistic, and too simple to create. Telling a \u201creal\u201d face from a generated one is only getting harder, whether in de-aged blockbusters or in your own social feed. It\u2019s something worth keeping in mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What about you? Has a de-aged performance ever pulled you out of a film, or fooled you completely?
