Yet behind the curtain, an unglamorous stagehand is doing much of the heavy lifting.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are the copper-laced panels inside every mobile phone, car key fob, digital camera and data-centre server rack on Earth. Without them, even the most advanced AI chip would be useless, unable to process even a single line of code.<\/p>\n<p>This year alone, more than 1 million square metres (10.8 million sq ft) of PCBs will roll out of WellTek Electronics\u2019 factory in Ayutthaya \u2013 just one company\u2019s contribution to <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/thailand?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Thailand<\/a>\u2019s scramble for an edge in the global tech supply chain.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThey are essential to our daily life. They are in all electronics you are using,\u201d said WellTek founder Jennifer Deng, who established the Thai subsidiary of her China-based Jiangxi Welgao Electronics in Ayutthaya two years ago.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Thailand is now Southeast Asia\u2019s No 1 producer of PCBs \u2013 often described as the nervous system of modern electronics, channelling essential signals through increasingly complex arrays of semiconductors, resistors and capacitors \u2013 and the fifth largest in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Deng\u2019s US$75 million WellTek plant, built in under a year, is the first of two planned for Ayutthaya, a major Thai industrial zone once dominated by Japanese carmakers and global electronics giants, now being rewired for the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> age.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A WellTek Electronics printed circuit board.
