\n A humpback whale carcass has been transported to a landfill facility after it became stranded and died on a Port Kennedy beach.\n <\/p>\n

The nine-metre whale was first spotted swimming close to shore at Long Point on Wednesday morning before it became stranded on a sand bank.<\/p>\n

Due to the condition of the whale and its low survival rate if it was to be towed back out to sea, wildlife authorities made the decision to give it a sedative to lessen its suffering.<\/p>\n

Sadly, the whale passed away on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

The mammoth operation to remove the carcass got underway on Thursday in a bid to minimise the risk of sharks coming close to shore.<\/p>\n

Perth Zoo veterinarians collected biological samples and data from the carcass prior to its removal to better understand the health of the whale and why it may have beached itself.<\/p>\n

The whale was wrapped in a cargo net before being dragged down the beach and placed into a waiting truck.<\/p>\n

“Thank you to the local community for their cooperation and messages of support,” a Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“Whale strandings are often complex and emotional events, and each one provides valuable opportunities to learn and strengthen future response efforts.”<\/p>\n

A shark alert remains in place for the area as residue from the whale may still attract sharks.<\/p>\n
