Eighty years ago today, Burt Lancaster made the kind of Hollywood entrance actors spend careers chasing. Robert Siodmak’s The Killers was released Aug. 30, 1946, according to the AFI Catalog<\/a>, marking Lancaster’s screen debut and immediately putting the former circus acrobat on Hollywood’s radar.<\/p>\n

There was no easing him in. Lancaster played Ole “Swede” Anderson, a doomed ex-boxer who learns two hit men are coming to kill him\u2014and simply waits. AFI notes that contemporary reviews praised the newcomer and his star potential. Eight decades later, the performance still looks like a remarkably complete arrival.<\/p>\n

Burt Lancaster’s First Movie Gave Him a Star-Making Role<\/p>\n

The opening comes from Ernest Hemingway’s short story, but the filmmakers faced an unusual challenge: Hemingway’s entire plot was essentially exhausted in that sequence. AFI says the rest of Anthony Veiller’s screenplay was built to explain Swede’s murder.<\/p>\n

TCM records Hemingway describing the story<\/a> this way: “The story was about coming back from the war, but there was no mention of the war in it.”<\/p>\n

The expanded story gave Lancaster room to become more than a victim. Through flashbacks, Swede emerges as a fighter pulled toward crime and Ava Gardner’s Kitty Collins. UCLA’s Film & Television Archive<\/a> says Lancaster “shot to stardom in his screen debut” in a story of “robbery, unrequited love and betrayal.”<\/p>\n

Critics noticed immediately. Variety<\/a> called it<\/a> “a hard-hitting example of forthright melodrama in the best Hemingway style” and said the performances were “without exception” top quality. Time<\/a> praised the movie<\/a> as “exceptionally suspenseful, crisp and lively,” crediting its “shrewd casting and playing” and “extra edge of low-life authenticity.”<\/p>\n

The Movie’s Reputation Has Only Grown<\/p>\n

The Killers earned four Academy Award nominations\u2014for directing, screenplay, film editing and score\u2014according to AFI. In 2008, the Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Its reputation remains formidable. The movie currently carries a 97% Tomatometer score<\/a>, while Rotten Tomatoes’ Lancaster biography says “Fame came to Burt Lancaster with his first film role” as Swede.<\/p>\n

Lancaster eventually won the Academy Award for <\/a>Elmer Gantry<\/a> and built a career spanning decades. Yet The Killers hardly feels like a beginning. A Los Angeles Times<\/a> appraisal<\/a> said Lancaster “commands the screen from his first scene.”<\/p>\n
