The Fuels for Ireland campaign group has urged the Government not to “weaken” long-stated carbon tax plans without “a full cost review” of the potential measure.<\/p>\n
In recent days, the group has suggested that the Coalition could slow down the timing of planned carbon tax increases as part of October’s budget.<\/p>\n
Under existing plans linked to climate action initiatives, the Government is due to increase carbon taxes resulting in a \u20ac53.50 rise in the price of home heating oil, a \u20ac4.86 rise in the price of a tank of petrol and a \u20ac5.76 rise in a tank of diesel by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n
However, with planned increases over summer being postponed due to Middle East war, it has been suggested further increases could also now be delayed.<\/p>\n
Responding to the rumours, Fuels for Ireland’s Chief Executive Kevin McPartlan told the Government: “Carbon tax has a clear emissions-reduction purpose. Before Government changes its trajectory, it should examine the whole fuel-policy system, what each measure costs, what it delivers and how the measures interact.<\/p>\n
“If Government believes the total burden on motorists, businesses and households has become too high, it seems strange the next measure we might slow down is carbon tax without first examining everything else Government policy adds to the price of fuel.<\/p>\n
“This is not an argument against lower fuel taxes. It is an argument for a smarter, long-term fuel tax strategy.”<\/p>\n
