{"id":664758,"date":"2026-08-31T06:45:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T06:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/664758\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T06:45:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T06:45:12","slug":"closure-of-five-level-crossings-in-south-dublin-a-goal-for-irish-rail-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/664758\/","title":{"rendered":"Closure of five level crossings in south Dublin a \u2018goal\u2019 for Irish Rail \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-rail\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-rail\/\">Irish Rail<\/a> has confirmed it wants to close all five level crossings along the south Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> train line, as recommended by consultants employed to oversee the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dart\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dart\/\">Dart+<\/a> improvement project. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An unpublished report, prepared by Arup for Irish Rail, notes that the \u201cemerging preferred option\u201d for the Coastal South section of Dart+ would involve the permanent closure of the crossings at Lansdowne Road, Serpentine Avenue, Sandymount Avenue, Sydney Parade and Merrion Gates. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It recommended that an underpass for vehicular traffic be built north of the existing Merrion Gates, which link Merrion Road with Strand Road and is regarded as one of the worst traffic bottlenecks in Dublin, and that pedestrian and cycle crossings replace the other four gated level crossings for vehicles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report, which runs to 681 pages, was delivered to Irish Rail in May 2022, but its conclusions have not yet been subject to public consultation. It focuses on Dart+ Coastal South, a section of the wider Dart+ project, which aims to modernise and increase the capacity of the rail network in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greater-dublin-area\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greater-dublin-area\/\">Greater Dublin Area<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The overall project would see the length of electrified rail lines increase from 50km \u2013 between Greystones, Co Wicklow and Malahide, Co Dublin \u2013 to 150km. The extended network would serve Drogheda, Co Louth, to the north, and Maynooth, Co Kildare and the M3 Parkway near Dunboyne, Co Meath, to the west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report acknowledges the closure of the level crossings \u201cin the absence of suitable mitigation may have an impact on traffic in terms of connectivity, additional delays or queuing in the wider area\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The four-year delay in progressing the report\u2019s recommendations was criticised by the Rail Users Ireland campaign group, which obtained a copy under Freedom of Information rules. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mark Gleeson, the group\u2019s spokesman, said the closure of the Merrion Gates crossing \u201cwas first discussed in the late 1970s\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDart passengers have suffered for 42 years from a compromise which prioritises private cars over the train,\u201d he said. \u201cThe proposals from Irish Rail\/Arup offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to replace Merrion Gates and to dramatically improve rail performance and capacity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhile some of the recommendations will clearly raise concerns, Irish Rail sitting on the report for over four years without starting public consultation is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2026\/07\/24\/i-wouldnt-have-thought-it-would-be-needed-raheny-locals-react-to-dart-line-expansion\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018I wouldn\u2019t have thought it would be needed\u2019: Raheny locals react to Dart line expansionOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A spokesman for Irish Rail said Dart+ was a phased project, with the Bray to Greystones element of the Coastal South section progressing first. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe remainder of the route, including the level crossings element, will not progress until 2030 at the earliest,\u201d he said. \u201cThe long-term goal of the Dart+ programme is to include the closure of the road\/rail interface at the level crossings on the southside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report notes that the five level crossings are closed to vehicular traffic between 41 per cent and 83 per cent of the time from 8am to 9am. The most frequently closed was Sydney Parade and the least was the Merrion Gates. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It notes that there were 28,000 vehicle movements across the five level crossings in a single day, with almost half of these (11,400) through the Merrion Gates.
