{"id":665030,"date":"2026-08-31T10:46:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T10:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/665030\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T10:46:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T10:46:18","slug":"official-warns-against-chinese-stardom-amid-reports-beijing-is-wooing-tzuyu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/665030\/","title":{"rendered":"Official warns against Chinese stardom amid reports Beijing is wooing Tzuyu"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"as boxTitle boxText\" data-desc=\"\u5206\u4eab\u5217\">\n<li>\n<p>By Chen Yu-fu and Sam Garcia  \/  Staff reporter, with staff writer<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A Straits Exchange Foundation official today warned that yielding to political pressure in exchange for access to China\u2019s entertainment industry rarely ends well, amid rumors that China is seeking to lure Taiwanese K-pop star Chou Tzu-yu (\u5468\u5b50\u745c).<\/p>\n<p>Chou, more commonly known as Tzuyu, is the only Taiwanese member of the girl group Twice. <\/p>\n<p>Her contract with JYP Entertainment is set to expire at the end of this year, and there have been widespread reports that she would not renew it.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/17.jpg\" width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Photo: Lee Hui-chou, Taipei Times<\/p>\n<p>She is reportedly planning to pursue solo activities under her parents\u2019 agency, Yu Hai Entertainment (\u745c\u6d77\u5a1b\u6a02), although China has also reportedly offered to help Tzuyu develop her career in China.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese-language media have reported that this would include access to broadcasting, concerts and talent agencies if she publicly endorses \u201cone China\u201d and says that \u201cTaiwanese people are Chinese.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the past decade, China has used threats and incentives to pressure Taiwanese entertainers to endorse its political positions, SEF Secretary-General Luo Wen-jia (\u7f85\u6587\u5609) said today in an interview with the Liberty Times (sister paper of Taipei Times).<\/p>\n<p>Artists who have already entered the Chinese market can have their work abruptly halted if they do not comply, while those who cooperate more closely are rewarded with greater market access, Luo said.<\/p>\n<p>Those who cooperate with China\u2019s demands tend to have career peaks that do not last long, he said, adding that China uses them and then discards them once they no longer have value.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s \u201cunited front\u201d efforts target not only entertainers, but also politicians, influencers and media commentators, Luo said.<\/p>\n<p>He decried recent budget cuts to media and culture, saying that legislators used to routinely call for more cultural funding and support for artistic groups, regardless of which party was in power.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on the paid fan platform Bubble today, Tzuyu asked her fans to wait patiently for news on her future career plans and cheer her on rather than worrying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know there are all kinds of rumors circulating online, but even so, you\u2019ve been willing to patiently wait for me until I can come back with new work,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need to worry too much. Just cheering me on means so much to me. Your support gives me the strength to work harder and keep moving forward.
