Those responsible for a shooting in west Belfast<\/a> have been condemned for causing \u201dfear and distress\u201d in the community.<\/p>\n

Police said a man in his 40s has been left with \u201cphysical and emotional trauma\u201d after receiving a gunshot to the leg. He was taken to hospital for treatment. <\/p>\n

PSNI<\/a> officers remained at the scene on Monday morning, in an alleyway between the Ross Road and the Falls Road.<\/a><\/p>\n

Forensic officers were also in attendance following the incident which took place at around 9.30pm on Sunday night. <\/p>\n

Paul Maskey, Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> MP for the area, said: \u201cI condemn last night\u2019s shooting in the Ross Road area of west Belfast.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no place for this type of violence in our community. It is completely unacceptable and is not wanted by local people.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose responsible need to stop and think about the fear and distress their actions cause in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

A PSNI spokesperson said: \u201cAt approximately 9.35pm, we received a report that our colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service were attending to a man with a gunshot wound in the vicinity of the Falls Road area.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers attended the scene and located the man, aged in his late 40s, in an alley that runs between the Falls Road and Ross Road. He was shot once in his leg and has been taken to hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough his injuries are thankfully not life-threatening, they are severe and will no doubt leave him with lasting physical and emotional trauma.<\/p>\n
