Seven police officers<\/strong> were injured during incidents in Belfast City Centre<\/strong> on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

A senior PSNI officer has described the attacks as \u201cshameful\u201d and vowed they will be \u201cinvestigated rigorously\u201d.<\/p>\n

In one incident, an officer required hospital treatment for a leg injury and in another an officer was bitten on the arm.<\/p>\n

Chief Inspector Andy George in two of the incidents, officers sustained serious injuries that prevented them from continuing with their duties.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWhile officers were policing a music festival at Boucher Road Playing Fields, a teenage boy was observed with bottles of alcohol.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen spoken to by officers he became aggressive \u2013 kicking one officer to the leg and another in his groin area.<\/p>\n

\u201cA third officer was also kicked in the struggle while the teenager was being arrested for assault on police and disorderly behaviour.<\/p>\n

\u201cA report will now be submitted to the Public Prosecution Service in due course in respect of the teenager.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIn the same area a 22-year-old man was suspected of concealing drugs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen challenged \u2013 an officer was struck to the face and knocked to the ground where he sustained further injury to his arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe suspect was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including assault on police, obstructing police, and possession of a Class A controlled drug.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite his injuries \u2013 the officer remained on duty.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chief inspector said another man was charged with assault on police following an incident in the Custom House Square area as officers policed another concert.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cHe became aggressive and verbally abusive towards the officer \u2013 attempting to punch him \u2013 and appeared intoxicated at the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother officer was also bitten on his arm by an aggressive male in the same area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe officer\u2019s skin was broken \u2013 causing significant injury \u2013 and he was unable to continue on duty.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers were also assisting with two males in the Custom House Square area when an officer was assaulted from behind \u2013 sustaining a serious injury to the back of his knee.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe officer required hospital treatment and was unable to continue with his duties.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Officers put themselves on the front line to help keep people safe \u2013 they do not deserve to be assaulted for simply doing their job.<\/p>\n

George said all of \u201cthese shameful attacks on our officers will be investigated rigorously\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWe have two people charged to appear before Belfast Magistrates\u2019 Court next month as a result of their disgraceful actions.<\/p>\n
