{"id":667388,"date":"2026-09-01T18:58:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T18:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/667388\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T18:58:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T18:58:17","slug":"elderly-patient-in-alleged-abuse-video-is-not-who-was-originally-identified-says-hse-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/667388\/","title":{"rendered":"Elderly patient in alleged abuse video is not who was originally identified, says HSE \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\">HSE<\/a> has met a second family following inquiries into a disturbing video of a healthcare worker and a female patient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It also confirmed that a \u201cpreliminary screening\u201d process has been completed, as part of its efforts to investigate if abuse, including psychological abuse, had occurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The HSE said that further \u201cappropriate processes\u201d were under way in respect of its investigations into the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The video footage in question appeared to show an elderly female patient being called \u201ccrazy\u201d by a healthcare worker in a hospital setting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The patient was also told she could not have a cup of tea as she already had one, the footage showed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The HSE has declined to identify the hospital location. However, after the video went viral and was reported in various media outlets, the HSE Mid West said it conducted an investigation into the video and said the footage had not been filmed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-hospital-limerick\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-hospital-limerick\/\">University Hospital Limerick<\/a> (UHL) or any of HSE Mid West\u2019s hospital sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">HSE Mid West added: \u201cWe are particularly concerned about the impact on staff across the Mid West, many of whom were subjected to criticism, abuse and threats in relation to an incident for which they had no involvement or responsibility. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cScrutiny of healthcare services is legitimate and necessary; abuse and threats are not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aisling Hogan, from Caherdavin, Limerick, had identified her late mother Ita Tobin, (83), as the woman in the video who was previously an inpatient at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) and was diagnosed with dementia before her death in a nursing home in August 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A senior manger at UHL met Hogan and her son and daughter regarding the issue last Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She described the meeting as \u201cpositive\u201d and she said she felt the hospital took her concerns seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Later on that evening, the HSE Mid West, which governs UHL, informed Hogan the video was not filmed at UHL and her late mother was not the patient concerned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hogan said that she was \u201cwholeheartedly\u201d sorry that she was mistaken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said she was shocked by the outcome of the HSE Mid West\u2019s inquiries, and she had no further comment to make at this point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\">Jennifer Carroll MacNeill<\/a> said on Monday: \u201cSometimes we are too quick, whether it\u2019s in politics or on social media, to jump to a particular conclusion instead of establishing the facts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI am very sorry that staff in UHL experienced that. They are extremely hard working, they are dedicated to patient safety &#8230; [There is] huge pressure with the presentations during August so I don\u2019t want them to experience that additionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a fresh statement on Monday evening, in response to further queries from this reporter, a HSE spokeswoman said that \u201cdirect contact\u201d had been made with the family of the patient in the video \u201cand a meeting has taken place with them\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe family have requested that their privacy and the confidentiality of this matter be respected,\u201d added the HSE spokeswoman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe interaction shown in the footage is deeply upsetting and falls below the standard of compassionate, respectful and patient-centred care that every patient is entitled to expect,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The HSE did not clearly state that it had identified the healthcare worker at the centre of the video footage. However, the spokeswoman confirmed: \u201cThe matter is being managed under the HSE\u2019s Trust in Care policy.
