This 20-Minute Fix Works Almost as Well as a Nap : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You already know the feeling: You&#8217;ve had maybe four hours of sleep, you&#8217;ve got a full day ahead of you, and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/how-does-caffeine-wake-you-up\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73115\" data-postid=\"216042\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">coffee<\/a> is only going to get you so far.<\/p>\n<p>Do you squeeze in a nap, or push through with a workout instead?<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2528246123\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new study<\/a> published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2528246123\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/a> suggests that, when it comes to your memory, a nap and a 20-minute workout may actually have a similar impact.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from McGill University in Canada kept 54 healthy young adults awake for a grueling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/newsroom\/channels\/news\/workout-or-nap-either-can-help-your-sleepless-brain-study-finds-373881\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30 straight hours<\/a> under lab conditions, then split them into three groups.<\/p>\n<p>One group got 20 minutes of exercise, in the form of moderate-to-vigorous cycling. Another got a 90-minute nap. A third group sat on a stationary bike for 20 minutes without pedaling, as a control.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/PeopleOnStationaryBikesWorkingOut.jpg\" alt=\"Athletes engaged in a high-intensity indoor cycling session\" class=\"wp-image-216210\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A 20-minute workout may have a similar impact to a nap when it comes to your memory. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/photo\/group-of-men-doing-an-indoor-triathlon-training-8766378\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dmitry Limonov\/Pexels<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, everyone was shown a set of images with no instruction to memorize them \u2013 then, three days later, they were tested on which ones they could actually recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Both the nap group and the exercise group remembered significantly more than the control group.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly identical amounts, in fact: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2528246123\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">23 percent better recognition for the nappers, 21 percent better for the exercisers<\/a>, compared to the control group.<\/p>\n<p>Statistically, the two interventions showed no meaningful difference.<\/p>\n<p>This study reflects a 2023 University of Portsmouth study that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/bad-night-of-sleep-this-20-minute-fix-can-do-wonders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found 20 minutes of moderate cycling improved cognitive performance<\/a> in people who&#8217;d been partially or fully sleep-deprived, even in low-oxygen conditions.<\/p>\n<p>But here&#8217;s the part that makes this new study interesting \u2013 the researchers also recorded participants&#8217; brain activity using <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electroencephalography\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electroencephalography<\/a> (EEG). They found the two groups got to the same result through what looks like completely different neurological routes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/EEGOnTopOfMansHeadUpClose.jpg\" alt=\"A cap holding electrodes in place on the top of a person's head, with eyes and nose visible\" class=\"wp-image-96114\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A cap holds electrodes in place while recording an EEG.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tim_uk\/8135755109\/in\/photostream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">(Tim Sheerman-Chase\/Flickr\/CC BY 2.0)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the nap group, the team saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/newsroom\/channels\/news\/workout-or-nap-either-can-help-your-sleepless-brain-study-finds-373881\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">markers of reduced sleep pressure and fatigue in the brain<\/a>, such as slow-wave activity easing off. It was as though the 90 minutes had genuinely bought back some lost rest (which makes sense as they had slept more).<\/p>\n<p>The more that fatigue signature dropped, the better people remembered the images afterward.<\/p>\n<p>The exercise group showed almost none of that. Their fatigue markers looked similarly elevated to those of the control group that did nothing at all \u2013 the workout didn&#8217;t make them feel any less tired.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, their memory boost tracked with a completely different set of signals, ones linked directly to how efficiently their brains processed the images in the moment of viewing them.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: the nap rested the brain. The exercise didn&#8217;t rest it \u2013  but it seemed to make it work better anyway.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sleep loss affects nearly every aspect of how we think and function, but many people can&#8217;t simply stop what they&#8217;re doing and get more sleep,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/newsroom\/channels\/news\/workout-or-nap-either-can-help-your-sleepless-brain-study-finds-373881\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says Marc Roig<\/a>, the study&#8217;s senior author and a sports scientist at McGill&#8217;s School of Physical and Occupational Therapy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our findings show that even a brief bout of exercise may help preserve one of our most important cognitive abilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That distinction particularly matters for people who don&#8217;t get to choose. <\/p>\n<p>Many people who most need this \u2013 nurses, pilots, new parents, anyone on a night shift \u2013 can&#8217;t exactly duck out for a nap mid-shift, as neuroscientist Madhura Lotlikar, the study&#8217;s first author, points out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?int_promo=stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Exercise is accessible, inexpensive, and easy to implement. That makes it a promising tool to help people stay cognitively sharp when sleep is limited,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/newsroom\/channels\/news\/workout-or-nap-either-can-help-your-sleepless-brain-study-finds-373881\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains Lotlikar<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>None of this makes either option an ideal replacement for a decent night&#8217;s sleep.
