\n\tVictor Miller, the screenwriter behind the horror classic \u201cFriday the 13th<\/a>,\u201d died on Monday in Alameda, Calif. He was 86.<\/p>\n

\n\tMiller\u2019s death was confirmed to Variety by his son, Ian.<\/p>\n

\n\tReleased in 1980, \u201cFriday the 13th\u201d is widely considered a seminal installment in the horror canon. It widely popularized the summer camp setting and themes surrounding teenage debauchery, which to this day remain essential tropes of the slasher genre. In a recent interview with a \u201cFriday the 13th\u201d fan site, Miller said the inspiration behind the iconic film came from, at first, an attempt to follow in the footsteps of John Carpenter\u2019s \u201cHalloween,\u201d which debuted two years prior.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFirst came the concept that we emulate\u00a0\u2018Halloween.\u2019 The title didn\u2019t come until the screenplay had already gone through at least one draft,\u201d Miller recalled<\/a>. \u201cThe idea for the summer camp came from my instinct that we needed a location where young adults would be cut off from all adult help, the basic idea in \u2018Halloween.\u2019 The idea that Jason had died before the film began also came from the concept in \u2018Halloween\u2019 \u2014 that there is a prior evil \u2014 Michael Myers\u2019s murdering the babysitter, if I recall correctly. The rest of the story came as a result of the location and the idea that, one by one, the campers would be eliminated by the world\u2019s most protective mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFriday the 13th\u201d went on to spawn one of the most recognizable and lasting franchises in horror, although Miller was not involved with the many sequels. Outside of \u201cFriday,\u201d Miller also wrote for TV shows like \u201cAll My Children,\u201d \u201cOne Life to Live,\u201d \u201cAnother World,\u201d \u201cGuiding Light\u201d and \u201cGeneral Hospital.\u201d His work on \u201cAll My Children\u201d helped the soap win three Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding drama series writing team.<\/p>\n

\n\tMiller was born in New Orleans, La., in 1940.
