Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n\u2019s 2004 adaptation of \u201cHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban\u201d is considered one of the best movies in the magical film series. Which made it all the more surprising for fans when the acclaimed director chose not to return for the fourth installment, \u201cHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet, David Heyman, who produced all eight movies for the Daniel Radcliffe-led series and is executive producing the upcoming HBO TV adaptation<\/a>, recently admitted he wasn\u2019t shocked by Cuar\u00f3n\u2019s decision. As Heyman recalled on the Tuesday episode of the \u201cHarry Potter: The Official Film Podcast,\u201d Cuar\u00f3n was \u201cexhausted\u201d upon completing the fantasy film.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe asked Alfonso if he wanted to do the fourth, and he said, \u2018Cabr\u00f3n,\u2019\u201d Heyman recalled. \u201cI think he was exhausted. I look at pictures of Alfonso from then \u2013 Alfonso is one of my best friends and he\u2019s my son\u2019s godfather and I love him. But I look at him from then, and I just look [at him]\u2026 Because he was exhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heyman noted that Cuar\u00f3n\u2019s demeanor was strikingly different from Chris Columbus\u2019, who had directed 2001\u2019s \u201cHarry Potter and the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone\u201d<\/a> and 2002\u2019s \u201cHarry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cChris looked like a kid. He was unbelievable,\u201d he said. \u201cAlfonso, there was nothing left on the table. He said no.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Heyman shared that Columbus also turned down returning to the film series after wrapping \u201cChamber of Secrets.\u201d According to Heyman, Columbus \u201cwanted to take his family back to America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cChris Columbus would fly back to San Francisco every weekend during prep,\u201d he shared. \u201cHe would leave on a Friday night and he\u2019d fly Sunday to be back first thing Monday because he felt it was so important that he saw his family and that he wasn\u2019t away. They then moved over. But it was during school, and they had to finish the school year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heyman credited Columbus for creating the world of \u201cHarry Potter\u201d and for setting the tone of \u201cfamily and positivity\u201d for future productions.<\/p>\n

Though, it seems Cuar\u00f3n wasn\u2019t the only director to get exhausted by his experience making the big budget fantasy movie. As Heyman told it, Mike Newell, who directed 2005\u2019s \u201cHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,\u201d was \u201cabsolutely shattered\u201d by the end of production.<\/p>\n

Heyman\u2019s commentary came as \u201cHarry Potter: The Official Film Podcast\u201d announced that it was rebranding into \u201cHarry Potter: The Official Series Podcast\u201d ahead of the series\u2019 Christmas Day debut.<\/p>\n
